A Study of Utility for the Public Design of the Urban Railway Space in Busan - Focused on the Guide Sign Design -

ABSTRACT
Recently, Busan Metro (urban railway) continues its technical and cultural effort to improve public services including replacement work of guide signs. The space of subway is a representative place which can be a barometer of the level of the public welfare of the city. While the number of users of the subway of Busan from home and abroad including the transportation vulnerable is continuously increasing, achieving public design in accord with this tendency is all the more emphasized.
This paper is a primary study on the public design of the space of Busan Metro primarily aimed at examining the current condition of guide sign design and diagnosing its utility. Analysis of data collected from field investigations of Busan Metro Line 1·2·3·4 and Busan Gim-hae Light Rail Transit currently running and surveys conducted targeting Metro users were synthesized to elicit areas to improve and pointers to future directions. And based on the instances of urban railroad being used for various purposes, the directions for guide sign design were illuminated that would satisfy both its function as station and its utility as public space.
The significance of the data for this study could be found in that they could be reference materials for public design improvement projects for the Busan urban railway which is to be built henceforward, and by enhancing the status of Busan Metro as a landmark, they could also be used as resources for city brand marketing.

ABSTRACT
Local governments are searching for their own unique historical and cultural resources and actively using them to develop a variety of cultural products, as a specialized business aimed at establishment of regional identity and external promotions. Development of cultural products is a useful tool for strengthening regional image and revitalizing the local economy by maximizing the unique historical and cultural resources. Therefore, this study designated a historic figure of Gangneung, NanSeolHeon Huh Cho-hee as a historical and cultural resource to be used as a cultural product, and intends to explore methods of developing her works into pattern designs by reorganizing them through visual images.
As a first step of study, the historical and cultural resources development of Gangneung and its cultural products development strategies and methods were researched to identify the utilization proportion of NanSeolHeon`s works as cultural products. As a reference, the NanSeolHeon Cultural Festival, which began in 1999, was researched and analyzed to present a development method. In addition, this study presented a method of developing patterns to be used as cultural products by developing intangible images to be tangible after analyzing the works of NanSeolHeon, knowing that her works had hardly been used, despite the historic value and weight.
Even though it was challenging to visualize the intangible images, since her works were Chinese poems (language) written in calligraphy, a method of developing pattern designs that use the calligraphy as a visual form was presented, based on her handwritten poems, as part of image strategy study.
The developed pattern designs will hopefully lead to development and creation of creative high value-added cultural products that will achieve differentiation from other regional cultural products and generate economic benefits.

ABSTRACT
This study derives design-based resources in military assistance system by applying wellness and service design. To do this, concept of wellness and customer journey map which is one of service design methods are investigated. This study also visualizes soldier`s experience of utilizing service as a army life journey map through the workshop with retired soldiers. Based on the results, this study investigated essential resources and main utility items for keeping mental and physical health of soldiers. By surveying people retired from military in three years, users experience of main military resources are examined. Issues on resources and improvement guide is finally identified by evaluating improvement urgency and satisfaction level. Highly recommended items to be improved were restaurant, visitor room and gas mask. Improvement need for combat shoes and clothes were lower.

ABSTRACT
The pendent light is fitted up in the most of dining room. The light fixture design is very difficult because of the complex system - the physical properties of light, the physiological characteristics of human, the response of applied space and the sensitivity response of resident. In this study, a material for pendent light design in the dining kitchen was made.
This study followed a four-step process. First, design parameters were extracted for an evaluation. The shape, w/d ratio, color were selected by parameters. In the second step, an experiment to evaluate response to a variety of parameters and categories was carried out using computer graphics. In the third step, the characteristics of the sensitivity evaluation were analyzed by means of factor analysis. The cognitive structure formulated through the factor analysis of the sensitivity evaluation. Fourth, the evaluation characteristics of the categories of the respective parameters were analyzed through a multi-regression method (HAYASHI I). Finally, we can expected objectively consumer`s response of pendent light design.

Home Collection Launch by Fashion Brands That Influenced Home Textile Design - Focused on U.S. Market -

ABSTRACT
The expansion of fashion designers into interiors through their home collections has provided an opportunity for the activation of textile design and textile product development which have played a core role in connecting the fashion and interior industries. The purpose of this study is to understand this new design trend in the textile industry by understanding the background factors and analyzing the success of this trend.
Since the pioneering efforts of Paul Poiret in Europe, many fashion designers in Europe as well as in the U.S. have begun to launch home collections. Ralph Lauren develops home textile designs based on its fashion runway sensibility and has been developing a broad market with distinct characteristics between the Ralph Lauren collection and the Lauren Ralph Lauren brand, which target different markets. Calvin Klein has been absorbing various levels of customers by developing home textiles based on its brand aesthetic, combined with new design elements and attempts at diversification based on the character of product and price. Ever since Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein launched their home collections, these two designer brands have become leaders of home fashion in the U.S. market. Missoni achieved great success in the U.S market by offering its luxury aesthetic in affordable products in collaboration with Target.
Factors contributing to the success of fashion designers` home collections that are likely to continue to support this trend are mutual cooperation and the promotion of industrial development by activation of license contracts and collaboration; lifestyle brand pursued by fashion designers that emphasize expanded their creativity; and the ability to accommodate lifestyle changes among modern clientele.
By providing high-quality textile designs, fashion designer brands` home collections have been contributing to the enhancement of life and culture, have contributed to the development of the textile design industry and added value to the product as well.

A study on the product design to improve usability and safety in the open of full aperture type metallic can - Focusing on the silver generation -

ABSTRACT
Since 2010, 729 persons were injured when they opened full aperture type metallic can for 3 years. To respond such problem, some companies developed a new opening method with a kind of easy open end, but it has not been employed widely. Thus, the difficulties in opening continue to the silver generation with a new purchasing power. The aim of this study is to analyze problems in the opening in order to improve easiness and safety in the opening and to create guideline for product design dedicated to the silver generation.
To achieve such aims, basic survey through questionnaire survey and in-depth survey through the opening process were carried out. The basic survey was on the hypothesis that the silver generation was different from the other generations. And sampling by generations was made to examine the easiness and safety of the can opening. Then, the in-depth analysis was carried out to specify problems by action factor in the opening process, and then a guideline was raised as below.
First of all, the usability was examined from the easiness of opening. As a result, the below guideline was suggested.
First, the opening is processed with embossing to figure out the front/rear of tap in the initial stage of opening.
Second, proper setting of distance is to be made between tap and surface of can so that it can be operated as a lever.
Third, as tensile strength of finger holding tap, grip strength holding body of product, and tensile strength of hand and arm to open the cap are much required, it is recommended to use aluminum foil instead of steel which shall be extended to the whole products without limitation.
And for the safety analysis, examination on spilling or dropping was carried out. As a result, the below guideline was suggested.
First, by proper controlling the gap between tap and surface of can, the embossing design of the can cap so that a finger can be inserted to the bottom of tap is needed.
Second, it is recommended to use aluminum foil instead of steel which shall be extended to the whole products without limitation.
Third, it is recommended to reduce the cutting side exposure by making different internal height between the external vertical height and the internal height where can cap is attached.
This study is significant in that it suggested improvement measurements for usability and safety in the use of full aperture type metallic can by means of case study and in-depth study through questionnaire survey. However, this study has a limit as it did not extensively cover children and the disabled. Accordingly, further studies is expected in those areas.

ABSTRACT
The development of cultural contents is a part of work establishing Korean cultural icon. Lots of time and efforts are necessary so that our cultural contents can compete as an international product.
This research considered the multiuse application of defense game and characters by developing and designing characters based on the King, Moonmu related tale transmitted on recorded cultural assets such as 『Samkooksagi』and 『Samkookyusa』in our culture`s original type.
In the introduction, it suggested purposes of research and problems, considered cultural contents` industrial significance of cultural contents of Korean antient tales utilizing storytelling and arranged contents developing measures of `King, Moonmu` tale. As the measure making contents of King, Moonmu, it was newly created under the motif of tale related to `King, Moonmu`.
The contents of `King, Moonmu` tales are organized by common characters and stories from children to youth and adults based on instructive story. And, characters were designed by drawing characters related to `King, Moonmu` tale. In other words, characters were designed by applying storytelling focusing on a hero of King, Moonmu defense game, King, Moonmu, Hokookyong, Jiuibupsa, Hwarangsonyeo, Ssaulabi Mir, Silla soldier, etc. Each character was added by explanation of applied character and equipment of pleasure, so developed to use multiuse characteristics for applying it contemporarily.

Analysis and Assessment of Usability of GUI of Memo Function in e-Book Application - Based on case study of memo function in e-book applications -

ABSTRACT
The development of new media has brought about the emergence of new form of book called e-Book. In e-Book is contained a memo function that provides UI to users to take down notes of important contents of the book or their ideas. However, contrary to the fact that more people are using e-Books and the scope of its use is expanding, there seems to be a little interest in memo functions in terms of usage. The idea of a memo has been investigated, and the kinds of applications and electronic books often used these days within the country have been investigated through surveys. As well, comparative surveys and research have been implemented through questionnaires and usability tests to determine the memo functions installed in each application. These surveys have revealed people`s normal memo use and habits. Through this it was discovered that memo use, in terms of behavior and habits, is not reflected in e-book applications` memo GUI, and the need for more specialized usability tests on this point was deduced. Accordingly, specialized usability tests were implemented and results were deduced from frequency analysis as well as Anova analysis. Among the five e-book applications that were compared in the results, the iBook`s usability appeared the highest, and when GUI elements were compared, those that were most and least useful among the five applications could be deduced.

Prototype Pattern Development of Little & Junior Baseball Jerseys Uniforms

Amidst the recent increase of little & junior baseball population, this study aims at developing the size specification and prototype pattern of baseball jerseys considering the body type characteristics of Korean children & teenagers and the athletic characteristics of baseball. The target range of research for little & junior baseball uniforms design was set at 7~15 year old boys in Korea. With 11 years as the prototype age when physical changes suddenly begin, the direct measuring instrument of 5th Size Korea was used to develop the size specification considering little & junior body types, and the grading increment based. Currently, the 1st research pattern appropriate for the prototype size has been manufactured through comparative analysis of the business pattern for 11 year olds from 3 local producer of little & junior baseball uniforms. The 1st research pattern was developed with extra chest size 21cm and garment length 67.2cm based on the sleeve type of open-type set. Using the 3-dimensional human model, the 1st Virtual Fitting Simulation was created and fitting test was conducted by 5 experts. Accordingly, the final prototype pattern was designed, and the 2nd Virtual Fitting Simulation was conducted. According to its results, the final prototype pattern that set the extra chest size as 16cm was developed. Hence, the size specification and prototype pattern of baseball jerseys for little & junior developed in this study shall be provided to baseball uniform manufacturers of limited market size where small scale businesses are concentrated in establishing the foundation for technological basis in local little & junior baseball uniform market.

Production System Design of Baseball Uniform Pants for Customized Mass Production

ABSTRACT
The standard production process and working time were defined to develop standard production process designed to ensure efficiency in production and also develop new customized clothes production system that improves the shortcomings of individual customized production and mass production systems and incorporate the advantages of both systems with an aim to design efficient baseball uniform pants customized mass production system.
This study developed the mixed-type unit production system enabling the customized mass production management, depending on the number of operators and equipment based on the defined standard process. For the configuration of customized mass production of the pants, a total of 50 reference processes were planned by referring to and analyzing the unitary operation among the reference processes of two individual production plants manufacturing the basic baseball uniform pants bonds type and the pants sewing process presented by JUKI Corporation.
The operation units were grouped into 4 units based on similar processes that can cope with various production elements by converging the sample-based production system and the multiple variety-small quantity production system suitable for various designs of baseball uniform and characteristics of individual customized production, and a total of 8 devices were set, such as Lock stitch sewing machine, Overlock machine, Interock machine, Top and botton covering sitich machine, Overedge stitch machine, Iron, Button hole machine, Button sewing machine, etc.
The number of operators was 13, and the system had 94% formation efficiency. A mixed-type unit production system was developed which enabled the customized production management, considering the working hours, number of operators, and equipment.
