ABSTRACT
Semiotics is very important in the design field. While advertisement and visual communication design and the social and cultural importance of the whole design has become maximized, it is very weak to logically research design messages, especially visual messages and images. Human life can be said as communication in signs. Human beings are delivered meaning and communicate through signs. Human`s life itself is a sign and human`s emotion and thought all appear as semiosis. This study examined human communication world consisting of semiosis from the a semiotic angle and divided it into five parts. First, the location of communication and semiotics built in the macroscopic area of human science was illuminated. Second, to examine the semiotic approach of phenomenon of human communication, overview of communication arts, position of semiotics, and basic structure of semiotics, and communication signs in our life were considered. Third, the expression and meaning of signs, messages and codes, and six signs of communication, and sign-communication-literature relationship were investigated. Fourth, the essential difference of semiotic communication from human communication was examined in the process of communication. Finally, the problems of contents, methodology, need of communication were solved in a semiotic angle. A sign plays a medium role of communication in one cultural circle. In other words, the cultural circle can be viewed as a “sign community” where mutual communication can be made using certain kinds of signs. A sign is a means of meaning production of all things existing within one cultural circle such that “what we know, how we know, and how we can know”.

JEWNR 14(0) 25-35, 2006 |
ABSTRACT
Recently, local government is activated make for other sects of the year-end and the beginning of the year or commemorate promotion in status of a city. Hereupon, the purpose of this treatise is to analyze existing pattern, and give a information about make a large bell after this. The size of a bell is becoming more and more larger, flaunt the power as it The bell of the people of Gwangju are 8,150 gwan, and bells of Gyeongbuk are 7,700 gaxm. The scale is too much a magnificent view. "A large bell of Jin―hae" is also produced from this tendency in Jin-hae. Jin-hae is famous for a city of beautiful cherry blossoms which is held famous "Naval Port Event" every year as historical naval port city. It is to commemorate 50th anniversary for the raising of status of Jin-hae city, and a building of the City Hall moving. The large bell of the people of Jin-hae is turned out at the end of 2005. Researches is investigated form a bell, scale, and structural elements as well as is attached to design development from external pattern. A large bell divide into Yongnyu(decoration on the top part of a bell),Eumtong, Sangdae, Ha-dae, Yu-gwak, Yu-do, Bi-cheon, Dang-jwa, Baek-gu, Si-jo, and Dangmok. The appearance design is an important element which indicate the value with the sound of a bell. Let`s analyze about several expression at work on “a large bell of the people in Jin-hae”. Like Yongnyu, Eumtong(a part making a sound on the top of a bell) is produced like existing one equally, but other factors is evaluated design that is characteristic of that city. Sangdae(a belt on the upper end of a bell) cross-arranged a cloud and Baek-gu. Baek-gu(a gull) is the city bird in Jin-hae, and strong as well as catch a fish. Also, this symbolize power and diligent feelings of citizen. Yu-gwak(a frame under Sangdae) express a shape and a figure in a frame simplified a leaf of the cypress tree(City Tree). Yu-dufnipplelike on tap in Yu-gwak) is simplification nipplelike a cherry blossoms. Bi-cheon(looks of an angel on the wing) statue is named from an angel fly in the sky. It mainly expressed the sun, a cloud, cherry blossoms(city flower) and Baek-gu. The flower is given expression to number like this. It means “5” letters the shape of a branch and “0” of the sun is “50”. This is commemorate the raising of status of Jin-hae city which seeing 50th anniversary. Five Baek-gu soar up making a pair at a part in Bi-cheon statue. Moreover; this show citizen cooperate each other and advance in one direction. Dang-jwa is a part that a wooden bell hammer which strike a bell. It mostly forms a frame of a round shape. A large bell of Jin-hae is also designed cherry flowers like that. Ha-dae(a belt on the lower end of a bell) is formed of thick line and design. This is to enhance a damage, a sound and the quality. It emphasized the image of Jin-hae as represent the flowers and the turtle ship(an iron-clad warship in the shape of a turtle). "The large bell of the people in Jin-hae" with this contents will furnish many data to local government`s production of a large bell. Especially now is specialization period. I consider the urgent, problem is development of data about the design and to look out for distinguished designer. The development of a pattern design insufficient is caused by professional designer`s absence.

JEWNR 14(0) 61-68, 2006 |
ABSTRACT
Recently, International Design Event has been held in Korea, such as “Design Korea" biannual events, supervised by MOCIE(Korean ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy), and in 2000, ICOGRADA, in 2001, ICSID. Among them, “Gwangjoo Design Biennale" is the first design event that include the whole specific design genre-This never happened in the world, and was held in the provinces. The most of Korean Design exhibitions have illustrated the national industrial power by displaying the real market products or visual works. But as the “Gwangjoo Design Biennale" showed the values and the visions of Asian and Korean design future, it showed the possibility of Gwangju which has a role of a engines for the world design industry. There is its significance. To take a continuous progress, it is needed urgently that the “Gwangjoo Design Biennale" has a vision of leading the world design trend by specifying Korean design values. By this activity, it is important to make the program for activating regional design industry. The programe should strengthen the capacity for each specific design field that Gwangjoo has. This is needed for “GDC(Gwangjoo Design Center)-the first regional Design promotion facilities in Korea", and ”ACC(Asia Culture Center)-on the construction in Gwangjoo". If the “Gwangjoo Design Biennale" had the right position by successful biannual opening, Gwangjoo has had a strong role as a world design future engine and contributed to develop regional industry. By this point of view, this study is aimed to make a plan as the strategy for activating specialized regional design industry related to regional culture by defining the role of “Gwangjoo Design Biennale" and making the vision of “Gwangjoo Design Biennale".

Hybrid Formative Art Design Which is the New Code of the 21st Century - Focusing on Hybrid Artistic Works -
|
김동호 Kim Dong Ho |
JEWNR 14(0) 69-77, 2006 |
ABSTRACT
Hybrid is commonly used recently as a word which implies what will emerge in the future while accepting all characteristics of the 20th century and 21st century thought it was created at the backdrop of the American society in 1950s. Usually, `hybrid car`is the system which uses the existing gasoline engine and electric motor, and means a next generation environment friendly car which achieves high fuel efficiency and low air pollution. Like this, hybrid is a word that is mainlyused to refer to a future oriented new object which is being implemented in present times. In response to that, this researcher combined the concept of hybrid with the patterns of mixed usage which started from the Western industrialized society in the 20th century. Like this, the patterns of mixed usage found in the combine painting, junk art, kinetic art, and so forth, which appeared from 1950s to 1960s onwards, had a direct influence on the hybrid formative art design that emerged right before and after 2000. This researcher assumed that `Head of Ox` which is the work of P. Picaso and `wheel of bicycle` which is the work of M. Duchamp were the beginning point of all those connections. In this way, most of digital expressions, which are applied to the hybrid formative art design derived from the convergence of mixed usage in the Western industrialized society and the new digital technological system, does not incur any separate cost if it possesses only the technology. The expression is unlimited if there is a device that can show it. The hybrid formative art design, which was used in the `Urban Landscape` and `BCI` that this researcher created, provides an environment which coexists with the existinganalogue by converting the image into symbols or digitalizing into a video. Works created by that kind of design is the 21st century design that requires new material, such as interaction and digital image and so on, and has the advantage of being easily integrated with any concept of far more advanced future.

JEWNR 14(0) 79-89, 2006 |
ABSTRACT
It is undeniable that contemporary graphic design has made a significant contribution not only as a marketing tool but also to the establishment of intangible asset values. However, it is undesirable for the development of graphic design to neglect the aspect of human nature demanded to graphic design. Therefore, the present study purposed to derive similarity in communication process and functional homogeneity between masks, which are primitive shamanic communication media, and graphic images, and to make a shamanic approach to the instinctive and psychological aspect of humans projected on graphic images. For this purpose, we examined the concept and principles of shamanism, the function and shamanic symbolism of masks, and the communicative correlation between graphic images and masks, and developed the discussion based on related literature. From this study, we confirmed that there is fundamental homogeneity between masks and graphic images through drawing conclusions that graphic images contain shamanic nature and adopt communication structure similar to masks and that they are quite similar in the expression system and method.

ABSTRACT
The 21st century has been characterized by the growth of the digital media game character industry, the development of motion language, and the increase of capital investments in the digital media industry. These developments have resulted in the creation of a new motion culture. Especially, expression through digital media forms has revolved around the creation of media characters. The present is a critical time for the study of digital game characters in a variety of contents and the study of the uses of interactive motion media. Within the internet, there has been a world-wide increase of graphic works in multi-media. The adaptability of graphic works used for advertising has also fueled this increase. This paper`s thesis is based on analyzing the strategy and principal of animation motion aesthetics. Based on this analysis a theoretical foundation can be established and classifications for digital game character`s roles can be created with the ultimate goal of using this analysis to create realistic media characters.

JEWNR 14(0) 101-113, 2006 |
ABSTRACT
After 1970`s, The local`s brand were activated in foreign countries however, after 1992 Korea revived a local self-governing system. So the central government`s policy decision was transferred at each region. So the design`s role for local brand was increased more and more. (foundation of local identity, culture industry activity considering local characteristics, local economic activation.) The local brand differentiate their products with other products and the local brand is developed notion for effective sale. It is classified product brand, place brand and image brand. The standard way for local brand, a local special product, slogan and festival are known to everybody that it is operated from 90 (in 1997) to 600 (in 2005) but, it is estimated 1000 ( various events are operated at the whole county) but it seem that there is no attractive festival because of absence of local brand development strategy, discrimination and identity. Therefore I will propose and review design`s role, local brand resources and local brand identity for local brand`s development.
