The Influence of Ancient Korean Patterns on Modern Symbol Marks - Focusing on Sun Symbol Marks -

ABSTRACT
Countless symbol-marks that are produced and utilized in Korea currently have somehow lost their nationality and significance. In addition, the serious problem of imitation is being raised. As a result of deducing the original form of Korean-style symbol-marks in this age of information, it was prescribed that the sun symbol-marks that have come about through the harmony between consciousness, for beauty and sun worship which are in fact the spiritual principles governing the creative activities of the Koreans at root, are the Korean-style symbol-marks. They were categorized into seven groups of concepts. Their ideographic representation and significance were observed and later the theoretical background of the Korean-style symbol marks were organized. Furthermore, through a table which have arranged the marks in chronological order, this study presented future tendencies for the style of expression to return its primitive original form.

Refinement of Visual Signs for the Everland

ABSTRACT
The development of the industrial culture has made a man to think the recovery of humanism and choose the active leisure. But the expansion of quantity has not made the quality grown. Sign system is the only communication between resort and the person who want to enjoy in there. However the visual sign including incorrect, misleading and unknown sign or symbol add streath to person occasionally. Only visual sign can guide easily the person some place where everyone wants to get there. In this respect, the visual sign of resort has only elementary function in our country. The special characteristics of resort gathers person who has different level of knowledge, live any place and different culture area. Therefore, in order to satisfy the above chacteristics the visual sign in resort must be the result of well designed. In this paper, all sign in searching area were classified into there fields such as sing of zoo, botanical and the rest. Then common problem which was involved in the Everland. As the above result, lackin of design room was most important mistake in there. So, such of improvised and disunited sign was made new sign is needed. This paper offers the fact that present visual sign does not mean simple function for indication. Such of that visual sign must be independent element fot recrtation. A humorous, familiar and expressive sign makes man comfortable and in such atmosphere person can be comunicated with beautiful and functional sign.

A Study on Postmodernism Shown in Visual Communication

ABSTRACT
"Chaos presides over the beginning of the earth. The sea is darkness itself pitching and rolling. Making its way through the pitch-black darkness, a flower of a rose is rising above the sea, which foreshadows the birth of Eve. She is decorated with hundreds of thousands of pink roses all over her. Her pink breast is completely bared just like fantasy". This is a commercial message of「Eden」, perfume which made Champs Elysees in Paris grow restless this summer. Perfume having come into being in 1996 exposes her fascinating breast to the competitive world marke. Original fragrance emitted by the first woman is the image eden aims at, which leads to postmodernism shown in visual communication. This technique accords with some characteristics of postmodernism represented to be what is called `pluralism`. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to contribute toward the development of visual designs characterized by their symbols through postmodernism shown in visual communication- visual utterance represented by the pictures fathomable to the eyes of the masses takes visual forms. The contents of this study are summarized as follow : First, dispositions and characteristics of postmodernism are presented as theoretical backgrounds of postmodernism. Second, features and tendencies of postmodernism are illuminated through postmodernism shown in visual communication. Lastly, the trend and spirit of the times for the century to come is predicted.

ABSTRACT
We live in the age of information and globalization with speedy change of the modern society. As various cultures of the world flow into Korea through the mass media like the flood and also effect grealty our typical lives, we lose our national identification and culture by them. In spite of this trend, fortunately we can find that one of important changes is shown the movement which pursues the national tradition. It is well known that our tradition has been disregarded by the modernism that can be adopted in any society and culture. This modernsim, elite thought which is based on the rational, economical and scientific theory faces the post modernism that was opposed to it. Because of an infuluence of modernism as well as the internationalization and an open door policy in general, Korea`s tradition and culture have been changed. In particular, in preparing for the Seoul Olympic, we became much more interested in our tradition and culture. Accordingly, many works concerning korea`s emotion have been produced by the design circle. This tendency along with infomation and glovalization leads to the movement which tries to make our traditional and cultural heritage the international culture which people of a global village may sympathize. This paper tries to find possibilities which we may sympathize from the illustrator` works which express Korea;s image, and to study ways to enlarge the boundary of traditional folk paintings of Korea and also to make the suggestion for new design.

A Study on the shape character of the primitive art in illustration and the domain extension of modern illustration

ABSTRACT
Even if primitive art had printed off it`s footprint distinctly on the world art, it really make me feel sorry that the most people don`t know the meaning of primitive art until now. The primitive art is the character that shows the phases of the primitive ages well. Although the primitive art containing the magical, sorcerous contents looks somewhat different from the modern art, it shows the spirit of that times with insight well. In a sense, the primitive art is more realistic and objective than the modern art. The primitive art is explained properly by the word of `prehistoric` rather than the world of `history`. The `history` means the history of the records written by the medium of scripts. The primitive art had been expressed by the picture itself rather than scripts because although the meaning of the primitive art is identical with scripts, it is more or less nreasonable that the primitive art had been expressed by scripts. Therefore when we discuss the primitive art, we should avoid the word of `history` as much as possible. In the early stage of the 20th century, the illustration work has taken charged of by painters. Although the behaviors of the modern painters are culturally, environmentally, politically different from those of the primitive times artists, the proposition of informing the meaning of their paintings through visualization is the same. The participant scope of illustration is gradually expanding now from painters, visual designers, cartoonists, critics and character designers to the ordinary peoples being interested in illustration and the specific peoples having the ability of making a visual thing the meaningful shape. According in that we can conclude that the origin of illustration goes back the beginning of humankind appearance. As the illustration plays an important part in the stream of modern arts and the function of the information society these days, it has penetrated the every visual culture having relation with a society and become a kind of the social arts field. Therefore the illustration has to come into closer relation with the general public and be in harmony with them, and it should grow to be the most human arts. In the 20th century, the deep interest in the primitive art, which has been on the rise as the mechanical civilization develops rapidly, last constantly. That is the reason of the behavior pattern of humankind based on the humankind`s basic behaviors. According to those behavior patterns, the primitive men made their vivid on the spot experience the formative beauty directly. The recurrent mentality to the nature of the humankind yearning for the pure and primitive instinct affect the modern men living in the mechanical and standardized civilized life too. We should relive the strong creative power comprised in the primitive art for the creation of the new humanism and the enhancement of humanity. Because that is the source of inspiring the modern men, who is being hardened by the mechanical civilization, with dreams and imaginations. And because the modern men`s endeavor to restore humanity can get the effect of life power transmitted to humankind is inner world by approaching more intimately the primitive art. The purpose of this study is to grasp the concept of the primitive art which is the origin of tough life power and pureness, and to analyze the formative sense being expressed in the primitive art by space sense, color sense and motion sense. After that the influence of the primitive art on the modern illustration is taken a glance at.

A Study on Typographic Design of the Visual Play

ABSTRACT
Letter, which was used as a method of human communication, required prints in order to transmit accurate meaning of mass information. Further typographic design, a concept of lettering design which play the form of various methods and expressional style along with the history of design, became a methodological description of visual expression. Various changes have been brought to express not only the visual shape itself but also its meaning by the method to express language as a visual form, which is a new mode required by the time according to the development of graphic design. Now modern conceptual typographic design is interested in aesthetics and visual freedom, and is laying down a solid foundation as a new concept of design. Typographic communication, the most objective and precise expressional method in the visual communication, must be studied as an expressional approach based on the roles to transmit information as well as to draw attention and to give inner satisfaction through the visual expression in this rapidly changing world owing to the high-tech scientific culture such as computer, digital, and multi-media, etc. The desires which rise from the conscious changes must be completed, as our society is diversified owing to its development. Typographic factors such as function, shape, margin, arrangement, proportion, contrast, shade, geometry, visual form, harmony between content and form, rhythm, change, motion, optical illusion, etc have great influence on typographic expression, but this thesis is focused to study how to design those factors, that is, typographic design, and the effective and visually play communication.

ABSTRACT
The continuous desire for self-expression from the birth of human history created art works of unique expressive mode with the changes of the times. Just as art is concluded as a result of self-expression, the ambiguous concept of genre and composite materials produce imaginary jump and endeavor in the process of creation. Further, the expressive freedom considered as an essence of an artist is liberates the traditionally long-established thought based on a person`s individuality and creative power. Closely selected media as well as mass produced materials benefitted by science, a person`s intellectual insight, and keen sensitivity are introduced to 20th century`s textile art, which has searched for a composite art, in a rational manner. Under this basis, the textile art is connected to the current of modern art to be enlarged and developed into a new field of the formative art. In particular, the infinite aesthetic value can be expressed by the selection of unique and various materials, which result in rich expressive capability, so that it is consolidating its foundation as a creative field in the modern art. In addition, as the modern art is inclined toward free self-expression owing to the development of scientific technologies and diversification of formative concept, the textile materials are extending its scale increasingly. Accordingly, this thesis is intended to explain the feature and expressive mode of modern textile art as well as the examination of its general concept and, it is researching to analyze various materials used in producing art works so that it may be helpful to explore the positive ways of future textile art, including the study on expressive materials.
