ABSTRACT
The concept of `Design` was formulated in modern society and from the Industrial Revolution to the World War, the graphic design has changed its formative method continuously in order to cope with a new social environment.
Formative features of artistic posters and Art Nouveau are completely contradictory to previous expressions. Linear expressions of the modern graphic design could be considered as a product of various trials and attempts for a new artistic expression suitable for mass production and still reflecting the modern features. Such linear expressions were developed under heavy influence of the Orient, including Japonism and inspired many modern designers of the West.
This new expression started to transform itself to have a geometrical formative feature, required in industrialization society. Transformation of organic curve expressions to geometrical linear expressions, observed in the Glasgow School and the Succession at the early 20th was also found to be influenced by aesthetical expressions of the Orient. Such trend of the modern graphic design has been also reflected on the design foundation of Bauhaus. Johannes Itten and Wassily Kandinsky, who exerted tremendous influences on design philosophies of Bauhaus, aiming for both subjectification and standardization, were also heavily inspired by philosophy and formative expressions of the Orient and it could be easily seen from their works. Their geometrical formative expressions, which are the ultimate product of expression simplification, shows what the modern graphic design truly aims for.
As stated above, linear expressions of the Orient has a significant influence over formative expressions and philosophies of the modern graphic design and therefore, it would be reasonable to assume that artistic expressions of the Orient have significantly contributed to development of the modern graphic design.

JEWNR 48(0) 159-170, 2015 |
ABSTRACT
Extensive use of PVC fabric for fashion accessories urgently calls for substitution in material use, because environmental problems and overseas regulations come to the fore. The environmental problems of PVC material is that it is categorized as an industrial waste in terms of its ingredient. It does not rot and PVC waste incineration releases various toxic chemicals. ATKO Planning Inc., the industry-university cooperation company of this research, developed an ecofriendly recycled leather obtained for invention patent. Application of the recycled leather in fashion products can complement the environmental problems of PVC. The basic raw material is leather powder from the shaving process making leather surface even. After cleaning, refinement and grinding of the powder, it is mixed with a natural bonding agent. The ecofriendly leather is finally produced through dehydration and compression process.
The recycled leather can be defined as ecofriendly innovative fabric based on the production process and nature of the material. It can solve the problem of environmental pollution caused by the PVC waste disposal. Its lighter weight than existing leather products can make a strength for consumers` usability, and it can also provide economic advantage in terms of distribution. Moreover, its same flexibility to the existing leather enables diverse transformation of design production. The surface can be printed, dyed, coated and applied with various patterns, logos and textures. It visually has the same appearance with that of PVC material or existing leather. The recycled leather has an excellent tearing and tensile strengths while its thin leather sheet can provide delicate finish of design product. The Department of Fashion Business at Yeonsung University and ATKO Planning Inc. developed upcycling fashion accessories by using the recycled leather after evaluating the suitability of nature of the ecofriendly material to the design.
The nature inspired design motif such as sea, land, universe, animals and plants were used. It is associated with environmental protection and the value of the ecofriendly material invention. The developed fashion items were mainly bags including clutch bag, tote bag, backpack, pouch and wallet. Among the outputs, design patents were obtained for 11 unique and functional products. 7 designs of them were the work of the university that drew attention to the positive response with purchase order at a European fashion accessory fair. Complementing design, color, function, and manufacturing methods will be conducted in the future.
It is expected that fashion accessories production with ecofriendly material under professional and systematic approach can be an effective countermeasure for Euro-PVC regulation. Also, it can contribute to preservation of the natural environment and valuable fashion accessories creation in the context of public welfare.
