ABSTRACT
A rapid increase in the number of the elderly is asking for role sharing of the government and the society on the elderly welfare. We have about 63,200 Senior Centers all over the country, and they are mainly used by the superaged elderly in their late 80s who are relatively healthy. However, there are so many inconveniences in actual use of the facilities that they are not vitalized and barely keep themselves in existence. This researcher aims to search for remodeling methods of the currently deteriorated Senior Citizen Centers with consideration for usage of Senior Citizen Centers at this point of time when we need plans to care for the elderly efficiently in the regulatory system who are in the dead zone of care through the nuclearization of family. The research contents are as follows. First, users` characteristics and preference for spatial environment of 298 old people, who answered the questionnaire among the users of 31 public Senior Citizen Centers facilities, were examined by the analysis framework of spatial environment. Second, based on the investigation results of preference for spatial environment, drawings of public senior centers which need remodeling were made, and a hypothetical facility was designed by space types(private room for grandmothers, private room for grandfathers) of this place. Third, investigation of users` satisfaction on the designed hypothetical facility was carried out, and on the basis of this evaluation result, the remodeling methods of public senior centers were suggested.
As a result, the research through virtual images was judged suitable for finding space images which are satisfying users, and this made it possible to find important design elements when planning of Senior Citizen Centers facilities. A summary of the contents is as follows. The remodeling method of living rooms in public senior centers was divided into two. For living rooms of grandmothers` private room, the western style furniture of L-shaped couches where the elderly could comfortably have a little chat facing each other, and the eclectic furniture for relaxation which allows choices of chairs or floors depending on their condition were arranged with a comfortable atmosphere in the light beige wallpaper. For grandfathers` private room, arrangement of tables and chairs of the western style, and the eclectic furniture for relaxation was done, complete with the white wallpaper. As for the remodeling method of kitchens in public senior centers, I planned restaurant space in the western style, arranging tables with the kitchen areas divided; the gas ranges were replaced with electric ranges, getting rid of danger of gas poisoning, and trouble of cleaning with water boiling over. The remodeling method of rest rooms in public senior centers was to remove the underused bathtubs and install two partitions for toilets in women`s restrooms, attempting facilitation of usage. The bathtubs in men`s room were also removed, and one partition for toilet and urinals were installed, allowing simultaneous use.

JEWNR 48(0) 397-408, 2015 |
ABSTRACT
Hanok, or Korean traditional Korean house, is a epresentative housing style of Korea with a long history. Today, it still draws a lot of attention; and efforts have been made to preserve and disseminate it. In this study, an attempt was made to analyze the Hanoks in the Gyeongsang-Do to provide data needed to establish the future direction of Hanok by investigating the formation of Hanok and the overall change in its shape.
First, the type of plan in terms of spatial structure was categorized into 4 types for both An-Chae and Sarang-Chae: `ㄱ`-shaped (14.2%), `ㄷ`-shaped (14.2%), `ㅁ`-shaped (28.5%) and `ㅡ`-shaped (42.8%). As for the number of Kan, An-Chae has about 1 more Kan than Sarang-Chae in the front, while both have the similar number of Kan in the side, indicating that An-Chae had more functions than Sarang-Chae. With regard to the area, An-Chae was greater than 100㎡ while Sarang-Chae was smaller than 100㎡, implying that An-Chae was the center of Hanok.
Second, the columns were dominantly in the angular shape; and the number of columns in An-Chae was approximately twice as many as Sarang-Chae.
Third, the stylobate were composed mainly of one or two layers of foundation. The exterior was smoothed as it was built, and the four sides (front, back, left side and right side) were built either by coursed masonry or un-coursed masonry depending on the terrain.
Fourth, the structural format of the main floor and room were uniformly the Wumul-maru style and Ondol style. The ceilings were basically in the style of lotus lamp, and installed additionally by Gomi-banja, Pyeong-banja, etc. The roofs were gable roof and gambrel roof; and the Sarang-Chae of Chunghyodang of Yean Yi Clan used hipped roof. The eaves were basically single-layer and double-layer eaves. While the Sarang-Chae of the detached residence of Head of Gwon Clan used both singer-layer and double-layer eaves, the rest of the houses used single-layer eaves only.
In this study, the similarities and differences of the subject in the Gyeongsang-Do over time were explored.
