JEWNR 48(0) 455-464, 2015 |
ABSTRACT
This study conducted factor and cluster analyses to classify men`s lower body shapes by utilizing 562 men`s direct measurement data from the 6th Korean Human Body Measurement Investigation (2010) and thus to provide basic information for the development of a sizing system for lower body of men in their 50s and 60s.
The analysis on the lower body measurement changes for each age group indicates that the measurements for height, width and length decrease with age, while circumference measurements, except for hip and leg areas, increase proportionally with age. Men`s lower body experience more significant changes in the thickness than in the width.
There are five factors according to the factor analysis and three types of body shapes according to the results from the cluster analysis.
These five factors are Factor 1, horizontal circumferences of lower body; Factor 2, vertical lengths of lower body; Factor 3, measurements to determine the shape of leg; Factor 4, lengths of crotch area; and Factor 5, lengths of hip area.
The Body Shape 1, a petite lower body with flat hip, is evenly distributed among all the age groups, which accounts for about 40.93%. The Body Shape 2, an obese abdomen and legs, accounts for about 32.21% among all the age groups and 51.93% among the men in their 60s. The Body Shape 3, a long lower body with slightly raised abdomen, accounts for 26.87% among all the age groups and 62.91% among the men in their 50s. The Body Shape 1, Body Shape 2 and Body Shape 3 are listed in descending order of frequency based on the overall distribution of lower body shapes among all the age groups and thus the most frequently appeared lower body shape of the men in their 50s ( 38.72%) and 60s (43.40%) falls under the Body Shape 1.

JEWNR 48(0) 489-498, 2015 |
ABSTRACT
Population aging has emerged as one of today`s most conspicuous trends worldwide. In this demographic shift, the silver generation has tried to actively adapt to their environments and embrace socio-economic changes, while dealing with their physical and mental conditions. Smartphones provide the elderly with useful information as well as a sense of relief that they are keeping up with the times, and allow them to enjoy their leisure life in more varied ways.
This study compared and examined the icon designs for mobile applications generally used by the silver generation. Different types of metaphor, vital in understanding the meaning of each App icon, were categorized according to the levels of depth and complexity thereof. Among them, indexical metaphor encodes visual/sensory description and relates to skeuomorphism design. This article aims to determine if designs based on such concepts can be a useful tool for the silver generation in interpreting App icons.
Icon designs relying on indexical metaphor which include elements that emulate real life objects, feature high visibility and thus lead to quick and better understanding of the function and content of each mobile application. And also, this helps the silver generation recall. Results of the research showed that the adoption of indexical metaphor in App icon designs is beneficial to the elderly. This article suggests that it is desirable to make further efforts to find and create effective designing elements so that the silver generation can make better use of smartphones.

JEWNR 48(0) 499-508, 2015 |
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to compate and analyze the morphological characteristics of fingernails when gel polish is removed; to scientifically analyze nail damage when gel polish is removed from nails; and to suggest a way to minimize nail damage. For this, an experiment of 5 females in their twenties and thirties was conducted, and their nail surfaces were observed using an atomic force microscope. The IBM SPSS Statistics 22 for Window program was used for the statistical processing.
The findings of the study are as follows: As for the untreated nails where gel polish was not applied, the results of measuring two-dimensional images and three-dimensional images showed that there were few differences in color density and the density was uniform and that the surfaces of their nails were almost even. When soaked off to remove gel polish, the participants` nails got rougher by repeated treatments compated with those of untreated nails. In addition, it was also confirmed that the degree of roughness of their nails increased by repeated treatments when ground off just like that of nails being soaked. When the roughness degree of soak-off was compared with that of grind-off, the defree of grind-off appeared to be lower than that of soak-off. This means that grind-off damages nails less than soak-off. And regarding the unevenness of nails, the nails ground off were found to be more even than the nails soaked off, which means that grind-off damages nails less than soak-off.
