ABSTRACT
The character is so effective tool that it can deliver emotionally their meanings by visualization from metaphysical language. So it can be very useful as a differentiate visual communication tool for conscious sympathy in the whole society. We need to design character as good for the various media, period and objects. With the recent focus in mankind`s interest in the character of the environment, this study verifies the status of character as a visual communication tool and suggests character design method as a visual communication tool focusing on Endangered species restoration project. As the result, realism, ecological `culture of life` and minimalism is reflected in design better than anthropomorphic and fancy character. This design concept of character is reached to have a plan applying character development in the other animals and plants of Endangered species restoration project.

JEWNR 24(0) 163-174, 2009 |
ABSTRACT
Conversion to Web 2.0 has opened up the intelligence and information era for our society. The digital environment now permeates in the society, economy, and media and various lifestyles changing the way we live and at the center of it, there is always the user.
The biggest feature of digital technologies is interaction, which was not part of traditional mediums, and thus through immediate feedback from the final consumer, or user, it was possible to convert production and consumption of information into a horizontal structure. Thus, most of the powers were given to the users. Unfortunately, however, in some of the services and contents offered to users there are many times that users are enticed or discreetly stimulated. This arouses questions on the ethics of the producers.
Due to the advantages of saving time, convenience of shopping and delivery, online shopping malls grew quickly, but with the recent saturation of online shopping malls, there has been high competition for the same consumers. In result, rather than being user-oriented, it changed to business-oriented and there have been unfortunate discoveries of improper expressions used to introduce their contents or to stimulate the desires of consumers.
This study examined methods for placing the user first and respecting the users, while offering contents for them, in order to come up with realistic plans to produce contents and fulfillthe role of designers for the users and to give users a lasting impression.

JEWNR 24(0) 175-183, 2009 |
ABSTRACT
The diversity of web design has been rapidly increased so the verification of the effect on design mode to offer the optimum satisfaction to users is needed today. This study examines the dual- and the single-coding theory in order to understand the multi-modality and proves a point that the frame is effective on web site users` perception and information-processing through the research on antecedent studies on frame theory. Three different types of micro site design according to the level of multi-modality were produced and displayed to participants to measure the recall effectiveness of the multi-modality and frame facilitation and then this study examines the relationship between those two. The more the multi-modality design is complex, the higher the users` recall is effective. The result shows that multi-modality on web site design and fame facilitation keeps close relationship.

The Symbolic Place and Placeness in the Movie < Gat-Maeul >
|
손은하 Sohn Eunha |
JEWNR 24(0) 185-194, 2009 |
ABSTRACT
While the term “place” is interchangeably used to mean environment, space or position, the term is more than a position and embodies the culturalization of the natural environment. Moreover, the term “placeness” refers to the comprehensive quality which makes a space into a place and distinguishes a given place from another place. This term coexists with the identity of a place as well as the related ideas such as a place attachment and a sense of place. A “place” and the “placeness” are ideas which cannot be formed without human beings serving as media, and they are based on the community theory or place which is built upon human ecology.
The intertwined relationships between the characters in the < Gat-Maeul > text are portrayed based on the aforesaid theoretical concepts. These characters form a natural community through the ocean as the medium, which depicts their place attachment. For “Hae-Sun,” the protagonist, and “Hae-Sun`s Mother-in-law,” the ocean is the source of life, a place to which they are attached. For “Sun-Im,” on the other hand, the ocean is the “profound image,” a place of death. The shrine located at the entrance of the village is a mythological place in which people pay their respect with prayer and devotion. It is also used as a place of grudge as well as mourning. In conclusion, for human beings, a place and the placeness are multi-layered concepts which relate to certain elements such as human beings and environment, time, activities, community awareness, scenery and relative position.
Finally, after investigating the Il-Gwang ocean, the actual background of Gat-Maeul, it has been proven that this text reflects the historical facts as well as the presence of that ocean.

JEWNR 24(0) 195-204, 2009 |
ABSTRACT
The importance of copyright about visual creation as a new technology in the area of visual design and image archiving is emphasizing rapidly. Especially, due to the characteristics of easy duplication and modification of digital contents such as visual design, it is necessary to develop a variety of techniques for various protection purposes such as ownership claiming and authentication.
To solve above problems, the watermarking technique is one of the most concerned techniques and is solution about image ownership. But comprehension of watermarking and application is insufficient so far.
In this paper, to propose a good criterion of watermarking about 2D image creation, we will compare with DCT based method and DWT based method(the DCT is used for JPEG compression, the DWT is used for JPEG2000 compression).
For performance tests, we used one hundred images from several jenre such as photography, animation, graphic, and measured watermarking extraction after some attacks. And we measured image quality before and after watermark insertion.
This paper aims to support base for copyright troubles in design related creation works.

`Consideration On Theoretic Background and Practice Method of Interactive Art Appreciation Method Adopted In Japanese Elementary School Art Curriculum`
|
이봉녀 Lee Bong-nyeo |
JEWNR 24(0) 225-242, 2009 |
ABSTRACT
The paradigm of art education is being changed along with the change of times. Especially, the importance of appreciation education is being highlighted even more in the art education so that an effective art appreciation education method which is helpful for improving creativity of children has been studied and practiced on a continuous basis.
To meet the needs of this change, this study is trying to consider a curriculum which is being applied in Japan to derive its suggestions in order to search for plans to make improvement on the problems that are created because the activities on the field of appreciation is lacking while the elementary school art curriculum of our country is leaned toward the expression activity.
Accordingly, the `art appreciation method by interaction` which is being adopted to elementary schools in Japan at this time as one type of effective art appreciation method is introduced and also based on analyzed results of researching and practicing it on a continuous basis for 10 years, we are trying to present the `appreciation education by interaction `Appreciation Education by Interaction: The Practical Guidebook for Pottery Art Teachers` as a practical material of education scenes in our country.
For the practical materials, the Aesthetic Stage Theory of Abigail Housen and VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) instruction methods that had become a theoretic background of appreciation method is discussed first while the new `primary school study guidance method` announced by Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology which had become an opportunity to accelerate in the research and practice of interactive fine appreciation education within Japan is discussed second.
For the `Interactive Art Appreciation Method` to be applied in school art curriculum of our country, a practical plan for practice is necessary. Accordingly, what methods of practice are required for the `Interactive Art Appreciation Method` to satisfy the requirements on objectives and details of school art curriculum as well as being applied to our country will be discussed through the investigation of `Appreciation Education by Interaction: The Practical Guidebook for Pottery Art Teachers` which is being applied to elementary school fine art curriculum of Japan at this time.
First, the contents are reorganized to be appropriate for educational scenes in our country through data analysis. Second, the contents must be diffused to frontline schools by being developed and produced as appreciation instruction materials through art education related research institutes. Third, because art is not entirely taught by full time art teachers in elementary schools due to the its nature of education, the education targeting teachers must precede for a satisfactory performance of education.
Thus, the problems that can be created at the scene of practice would have to be improved and developed through a continuous process of research by a faster practice in elementary school fine art education scenes of our country.

|
나하나 Na Hana |
JEWNR 24(0) 243-252, 2009 |
ABSTRACT
Due to the development of digital data processing and electronic communication, the present home environment has become able to serve people`s various needs such as remote medical treatment or education and home shopping. The digital environment based on networks will become more intelligent and build a Smart Home which is convenient, safe and personalised. In order to design a home as a personalised, comfortable space, specified user groups need to be studied and provided with suitable services to their context using feasible technologies rather than simply add more functions to fulfil people`s needs.
The research in this thesis is intended to propose a new Smart Home service for a specific user group. First, the theories of Ubiquitous Computing and Context-Awareness were studied as they are fundamental knowledge of Smart Home, and Smart Home was defined with its representing services. Then existing Smart Home systems for health care were analysed based on the general process of Context-Awareness. They all monitored the subject`s activities in the home environment to detect unusual trends that may indicate developmental or incipient health issues, but their methods were different.
Last, based on the literature review, several approaches were proposed for a Smart Home service to prevent young children`s accidental injuries using possible technologies. The approaches are expected to be materialised in the near future by enhancing the strengths and weakening the weaknesses and also to be applied to another Smart Home services.
