Title
Reflections on Visual Communications Design in Terms of the Subconscious Imagination and Modern Thought
홍동식 Hong Dong-sik
Abstract
Subconscious imagination presented the freedom of expression to artists and designers through the avant-garde. Also, the philosophy of modern France was placed as the most influential basis of thinking in the rather short history of visual design of around 100 years (depending on the perspectives, the introduction of lithography, the new printing technology, has been viewed as the starting point of the visual design). Based on these principles, rather than a simple image deployment, the visual design takes the role of a communication tool as its most fundamental purpose by emphasizing inner identity which is inaccessible by language and texts. This study will focus and contemplate on subconscious imagination and de-formal expression in the area of modern visual design, and will consider the tendency of vernacular design with anti-aestheticism. At the same time, this study will look into what possibilities the research method through de-formalistic modern Western philosophy may have. Particularly, the study will show how surrealistic thinking leading to the expansion of the subconscious and the unconscious and the expression of imagination through it have expanded the expression domain of the visual design. Through various interpretations and evaluations, this study will explore and discuss whether de-formalistic expression of the modern communication design is another struggle to break from the modernism or whether it encompasses any meaning as a new form derived from the post-modernism.
