The Meaning of Luxury in the Fashion - Focus on a Historical Perspective -

Abstract
In order to interpret the meaning of luxury in modern fashion, this study first provides its own definition of luxury, analyzes the history of luxury in the western fashion, and discusses the meanings of luxury in the contemporary fashion. The results may be summarized as the following. The results may be summarized as the following. First, luxury can be defined as ways of life, commodities, or services that are more extravagant and sumptuous than it is necessary. Second, the phenomena of luxury in the western fashion can be divided into before and after the beginning of the twentieth century. Before the beginning of the twentieth century, there was an increasing desire to express the status symbol through fashion with the rapid growth of the bourgeois class and their co-existence and competition with the traditional noble class. Since the early twentieth century a luxurious consumption of fashion continued in more open and multi-directional ways as a result of the desire to express the differences among social classes that still existed in a popularized society. Third, the aspects of the luxury in the contemporary fashion of the twenty-first century may be seen in the quantitative expansion of the SPA brands and in the qualitative success of the luxury brands. Fourth, although the consumption of both qualitative and quantitative luxury existed throughout each period, the number of consumers who can enjoy the quantitative and qualitative luxury has increased greatly in recent years. As individual tastes get diversified in modern times, the element of pleasure for self-satisfaction is more emphasized among the values of luxury.
