Abstract |
The aim of this study is to discuss today`s fashion as art by examining fashion exhibitions in museums. The study explored the history of fashion exhibitions before and after the establishment of the Fashion Museum. Through this case study, the study classifies exhibitions and discusses their significance. The review of literature and case study had been conducted so as to analyse the different types of contemporary fashion exhibitions. The study was conducted over a period of five years from 2009 to 2013, as fashion exhibitions have actively emerged approximately since the year 2010. The subjects of research were the exhibitions held in art museums, design museums and fashion museums in Europe, the United States and Japan. The study discusses retrospective exhibitions honoring historic designers and celebrities, thematic exhibitions that focus on the metamorphosis into today`s fashion, traveling exhibitions and self-museum exhibitions for fashion houses. The economic implications and the expansion of the meaning of art are discussed as the significance of fashion exhibitions. The study has also discussed the prospects for fashion exhibitions in Korea. |
