The Style Characteristics and Type Classification of Modern Furniture Design

Abstract
This study is to analysis the stylistic characteristics and classify the furniture design considering modern changes of furniture while the residential space is modernized. The scope of this study show the modern characteristics of Korean furniture design and arrange systematically the modern style. The target of this study focused on the cabinet for residential space in Japanese colonial period that modern living space has been established. The results of this study are as follows. First, as the residential space is modernized, furniture was re-arranged depending on the function of each room and changed to enhance the efficiency of storage and divided into dual category, sitting furniture and Western Style furniture as stand-up space generated. Second, modern furniture design can be classified into 2 types, improved Korean style, compromised model of Japanese/Western type. Third, stylistic characteristics of these 2 types are as follows. The improved Korean style was modified by improving space application and cabinet function while keeping the basic type of traditional furniture. The compromised model of Japan/Westen was a mixed form blending the basic type and the pattern of foreign furniture, and it was the basic structure of modern furniture. Based on western style furniture, type compromised furniture improved in Japan was typical. Fourth, the modern furniture as a new stream was introduced from Japan and some functional formative concept and a production method of standardization was partly started introducing.
