A Study on the Development of Wallpaper Design for Children Using the Factors of Experience Design

Abstract
As contraction of wallpaper market due to the recent national economic depression and excessive competition between wallpaper manufacturers, domestic wallpaper design field has faced a variety of problems. Compounding the problem, consumer`s living standard has been improved and also their pursuing value has been changed at the same time. Therefore, it has been demanding that former conception of the product design and their purpose should be changed in a more appropriate way. In the wide range of design fields, many companies have been researching and developing products using brand new design methods to keep pace whit those consumer`s transvaluation and experience design is the one of those approaches. Designs and products using factors of experience design have already been proved its usefulness not only in domestic design field but also around the world. However, it is the fact that the utilization and study are insufficient in the internal textile design area. In this study which started with those timely problems, the elements of experience design method are used to develop textile pattern design, particularly in wallpaper pattern design sector. Especially it was based on Kids marketing because it was considered suitable as the way to revive a stagnant market and increase sales efficiently. Thus, the provisional target consumer of this study was limited for children. In addition to this, the study developed and suggested designs referring to classification of experience design for young children to be more methodical and concrete. As a result of the research and design experiments, four wallpaper designs was created and each design was planned to satisfy the aforementioned classification such as sense-cognitive learning type, action-cognitive learning type, sense-emotion evoking type, and action-emotion evoking type respectively. While conducting this study, it was revealed that the existing process of wallpaper manufacturing possesses a limit in generating various experiences, but it was also clear that it can be solved by using diverse functional inks and different ways of print. However it is not simple and easy to assess whether a product can stimulate participation or not, so that it is required to establish firm criteria for experience design and necessary to bring out the conception and categorization of it distinctly in continuous research.
