Universal Fashion for the Visually Impaired Persons - Design Development of Woman Casual Jumper -

Abstract
Despite the number of visually impaired persons is increasing, the research about the life pertaining to clothes and clothing for the visually impaired persons was rare compared to the life pertaining to clothes and clothing for other disabled due to the recognition of their free physical movement, and despite the highly dangerous in daily life, the clothes design for the visually impaired persons was narrow with corresponding to the poor development of clothes design for their characteristics. The purpose of this research is to improve the environment of the life pertaining to clothes and clothing that accompanies another obstacle to the blind based on the universal fashion design concept developed universal design that illustrated `design for all` as a slogan, and developed the design by selecting the woman casual outside jumper as the developing item considering the situation of the visually impaired persons who are possible to expose the danger in outside more than inside. For this, it is to define the present and necessary elements of life pertaining to clothes and clothing, and define the concept and characteristics of universal fashion design as fair in use, flexibility in use, safely-oriented, affordability, and accessibility based on the universal design. The guideline for the product development was established as the standard of PPP (Product Performance Program) of Nakagawa Satoshi for practice and assessment of universal concept, and developed the jumper design for the visually impaired persons based on this standard. The developed item is a casual jumper for women suitable for spring, autumn or winter. This research adopted as a concept the 2012`s trend `City Outdoor Look` to supply the equality that enables a visually impaired person wearing it not to be distinguished from other normal people. This research did not realize only the flexibility of universal fashion by adding elements whose size and design can be adjusted according to the wearer`s preference or ability but also the safety of it by the design to make safe physically and psychologically the wearer against the risk of walking at night. In addition, this research pursued supportability of enabling the wearer to put on and take off it easily with detailed elements of clothes by considering visually impaired people`s characteristics. Finally, this research sought accessibility with the pattern which enables them to percept information of clothes easily or to which fitness was applied. The developed universal fashion like the above is the design for the function of protection them from the possible danger as well as completion of esthetic desire to satisfy even small discomfortable in which the visually impaired person is suffering, and it is suggesting the development of prototype and the evaluation of exterior elements as the future research.
