Abstract
From the ancient times, wishing for and trust in love have been a permanent philosophical theme of human, and new symbolic signs of love have been born and developed till the digitalized modern society. Nevertheless, studies on expression of love, which is the most basic aspect of a range of diverse human desires and feelings, have hardly been dealt with. In that respect, this study was to consider the meaning and wishes of human love through symbolic signs, while investigating the meaning and expression of love presented with symbolic signs used from the past till now. It was found that the symbolic signs representing love in oriental and western worlds refer to wishes for love in a variety of forms and imply some symbolic expressive elements. The expressive elements representing love are symbolic signs standing for various fields and special facts, but they do not mean the same thing to every person. Various symbolic expressive elements associated with the feeling of love are used as a certain means of communication and constitute signs with multiple meanings. In addition, those elements play roles of wish and hope for love, constantly reproduce meanings and deliver ambiguous aspects to us in some effective ways. Historical records in every culture indicate that man pursues, calls for or predicts love and avoids upcoming crisis and protect love through various religious ceremonies and beliefs. Expression of love presented with symbolic signs is cultural and religious product of each age and displays itself in various ways regardless of ages and countries. At the same period, reveals culture and sentiment of each country, age and religion in a symbolic way.
