Urban Design and the Public Good in the American New Urbanism

Abstract
This Study focuses on deducting the relativity of the public good to the corporeal characteristics in step-by-step instructions on urban design in the American New urbanism. New urbanism has ten basic principals. It has achieved by not imposing legal control but encouraging dwellers in their well-being that have their choice in the process of urban design. The keyword of the basic principals are mixed-use and walkability for rehumanizing. These design for union of society, and then have the public good that is self-sufficiency, activating of community by belonging, health and safety, ecological balance. Design of New urbanism has inherited algorithms for a long time and acclimate circumstances, express variety and complexity of history and culture. The elements of design derive optimums and show cohesive self-organization in the multiplicity of barred environment. New urbanism has the signification and suggestion for the public good. And then this study find the value and application method in Korean urban design.
