On Traditional Folk Costumes in Norway : Bunads

Abstract
Although the whole world gets unified influenced by globalization and internationalism, various traditional wears of each race and region still do exist, which inherit from generation to generation for a long time. The purpose of this study is to help development of contemporary dress design, by analyzing Norwegian traditional wear Bunads, where is a country to preserve their traditional wears well. A method of it was comparative study, mainly researching records and photos, and analyzing cited books. Results of analyzing Norwegian traditional wear Bunards according to regions, are following. First of all, because of its origin, it reflects wear of rural folks, of which basic formation is generally like this. For men there are basically jacket which has been settled since late 18th century, linen shirt and pants, along with vest, hat, knit stocking, and black shoes with buckle decoration. For women there is basically home-woven linen blouse, along with skirt, apron, sleeveless jacket or bodice accompanied by a shawl, and scarf or bonnet for head ornament. Secondly, main colors of traditional wears were black, white, dark blue, red, green and yellow, while the more check patterns got used as it gets to the North. Thirdly, being influenced by Vikings, there are so many silver round trinkets, which stand for the sun. Buttons, chain, or brooches were used to straighten or decorate clothes. Trinkets were made of silver, brass or pewter etc. Fourthly, thick wool was mainly used because there was freezing. Handicrafts such as embroidery, tassels, weaving, or applique were used much. Especially while neighboring countries such as Denmark or Sweden mainly used solid cloth, traditional wear of Norway was embroidered on both side of the body, on edgy or at the center of breast. Fifthly, they divided single and married persons by head ornaments or color of clothes.
