| Abstract |
| This study is to find out what the woman underwear connote about the woman character, in the late 19th century when suppression on the woman body was extreme, and in the late 20th century when social position of woman is developed. Results are such as follows Traditional/passive woman character showed in the late 19th century, and modern/active woman character showed in the late 20th century. The change of role, education, upgraded social position, the advance of science are the major reason of the change. Woman wore the underwear which is painful and tightened the body to emphasize the line of the body in the past when woman were subordinate to her husband. In the late of 20th century, woman who has ability and upgraded social position wear the underwear which emphasizes the body line, and active woman style, not traditional womanly. |
