A study on repeated patterns shaped from nature-focused on the works of William Morris-

Abstract
With artists, the purpose and essence of art is to create and produce beauty. Art is an idealized expression of nature in a visual form. Nature, which continuous changes and complicated but organized order indwell in, provides works of art with infinite materials and has been expressed in a various ways and methods according to the will to shape things into pattern and a sense of beauty of human being. In the history of art, many a artisan can be found who were inspired by nature, and William Morris(1834-1896) stands out in that province. William Morris was a poet, philosopher, socialist, artisan and pattern designer, and this paper is focused on him as an artisan and pattern designer. Morris was a man who had a deep love for nature and beings in nature, and a passion for human history, and as a naturalist and designer, he pioneered the structure of repeated patterns inspired by nature. The structure of repeated pattern provides certain orders in design and predetermines the relation between different patterns. The repeated pattern of Morris shows various arrangements in a unified stream of patterns, and this paper is focused on the pattern in which the basic 8 units of Proctor are repeated and regards the pattern as Morris`s artistic language. In this study, through analyzing his life and his works with the repeated patterns of plants and way to arrange them, the writer tries to understand Morris`s sense of design, the combination of narrative design familiar to people and repeated pattern based on nature.
