abstract
Background This study aims to develop and present textile patterns and bag designs for Generation MZ, utilizing the Chaekgeori icon. This approach intends to enable Generation MZ to access and appreciate the value of traditional cultural archetypes, such as Chaekgeori, through fashion accessories, thus fostering a sense of familiarity. Furthermore, this study seeks to demonstrate that traditional cultural archetypes possess inherent uniqueness and excellence and can be effectively commercialized for practical use. Methods Initially, this study developed five textile patterns by extracting icons related to academic origins from Chaekgeori icons previously developed using M. C. Escher’s tessellation techniques (translation, axis, and glide reflection) in the preceding research. Five bag designs were created to evaluate the practical applicability of these developed textile patterns, targeting women in their twenties. Result 2D mapping results of the five textile patterns incorporated into the five bag designs were evaluated through in-depth interviews with five graduate students from fashion-related departments in the Jeju region. Based on these evaluations, the five textile patterns were printed using digital textile printing (DTP), and the five bag designs were produced and presented. Conclusion In conclusion, the bag designs incorporating the textile patterns reaffirmed the unique and valuable qualities of Chaekgeori as a traditional cultural archetype, demonstrating its potential for practical commercialization in everyday products accessible to everyone. Furthermore, this study provided an opportunity to promote the perception that traditional cultural archetypes are easily accessible materials for Generation MZ, fostering positive interest and engagement with these cultural archetypes.
