Background In the modern society, of confusion and uncertainty, people tend to become increasingly curious about the future and often, fortune-telling and horoscope services are their ways of alleviating anxiety. In consideration of such phenomenon, this study aims to employ the five iconic elements of the five elements theory - Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金), and Water (水)-into jewelry pieces through the sculptural reinterpretation, so that could bring positive energy to people. Therefore, the study suggests jewelry designs incorporating the shapes and colors of the Five Elements Theory while using the traditional enameling technique.
Methods In this study, it examines the concept of Yin-Yang and the five elements, the iconic elements and meanings of the Five Element Theory, the definition of unit elements and compound elements, the characteristics of general shapes of Yin-Yang and the five elements, and the design principles of symbolic shapes. In addition, it explores the definition, techniques, and preceding cases of enameling, a traditional technique chosen for the design suggested in the study. For next, it suggests the jewelry incorporating the shapes and colors of the five elements to be in line with the social trend of fortune telling and four pillars of destiny, as well as the beauty industry and jewelry industry, continuously growing.
Result First, this study verified the elements like coexistence and incompatibility by understanding the concept of Yin-Yang & Five Elements and the nature of each element that are closely related to our lives, and also verified the symbolic figures of each element and their combination. Through the results of preceding researches, this study found out that the actual corporate forms of symbol were made up of the combination of coexistential figures, and also verified that they could be utilized as design elements. Also, this study aimed to contribute to consumers’ preference by revealing the cases in which the popular luxury jewelry products accorded with the form of Five Elements. Second, this study recognized that the cloisonne enamel technique that was selected as an expression technique was a deeply-rooted traditional technique of craft, by considering its’ history and definition. Through work cases, this study also verified that various techniques were researched and preceded, and limited the range to low-temperature firing by modernly reinterpreting based on the traditional technique. This study also applied the symbolic colors of Five Elements to jewelry. In the results of researching the jewelry owned by female consumers, they matched with the jewelry colors ranked No.1-5, which verified that the jewelry of this study could be preferred by consumers. Lastly, this study produced the forms of jewelry by developing the design of figures symbolizing each one of Five Elements, and then suggested the jewelry combined with cloisonne enamel technique for expressing the colors and texture of Five Elements.
Conclusion Amid growing concerns for the uncertain future, fortune-telling and horoscope are becoming favored by many, so this study aims at providing the jewelry incorporating iconic shapes of the Five Elements Theory to bringing in a positive energy, in turn alleviating anxiety and relieving by simply putting on the jewelry. The significance of this study is to promote the jewelry reflecting the Five Elements and furthermore, traditions of Korea through modern interpretation of the Five Elements, to the world. |
