abstract
Background The paper aims to close the digital divide and improve life quality in the aspect of cultural living of the elderly by reforming the service design of kiosks in movie theaters. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated digital transformation, fundamentally changing the basis of daily life from offline to online. However, people who cannot adapt to the pace of the change, especially the elderly, are being ostracized, which deteriorates the digital divide. The paper aims to reduce such inequalities by suggesting a new design of UI/UX of digital kiosks for the elderly, particularly the kiosks in movie theaters. Method The research was conducted through the design thinking process using the double diamond method. It served as a tool for diverging tools to comprehensively explore the issue of kiosk accessibility for the elderly and a convergent source to take focused action. The process consisted of three parts of the double diamond method including the discover, define, and develop stage. The study investigated the specific factors that affect the user experience of kiosks through field research, in-depth interviews, IDEO brainstorming, and wireframe prototyping. Result Reforming the UI/UX of digital kiosks into the elderly accessible form confirmed that the elderly needs a process of walking throughout the usage with detailed explanation. We elicited the main problem as the lack of detailed explanation regarding words, UX, and UI, while investigating at the discover and define stage. Therefore, the modified version was accompanied by a comprehensive description throughout the digital kiosks experience. Conclusion The study successfully suggested the redesign of digital kiosks through a convergent and divergent tool in the design thinking process. The ideation contributed to the relevant literature by improving the knowledge of the status quo of the elderly’s user experiences on digital kiosks and suggesting specific and feasible design solutions, closing the digital divide.
