abstract
Background Art appreciation is often influenced by sources such as news, mass media, and experts. These sources provide a frame of reference for others to unconsciously appreciate artworks, which may obstruct their voluntary and out-of-box thinking. Consequently, viewers may not always express their true feelings. To avoid this issue and encourage free thinking, we believe that people should remind themselves of what is immediately felt after looking at an artwork, and gradually establish a sense of communication. Methods Successful communication necessarily involves the exchange of information, and this study aims specifically to enable communication through affect, utilizing the development of a new art appreciation system. We first developed a flow chart and constructed the online system for viewers to look at artworks and express their affects according to what they felt after appreciating the artworks. The new art system data utilization strategy was formulated by constructing a logistic regression model for predicting the likeness intention of artworks. Result The development of a new artwork appreciation system began with the intuition that a system that allows viewers to express voluntary and immediate physical reactions. Accordingly, the developed system enables viewers to express their sensual impressions as feedback. Also, we analyzed data in the art system using affect data. Through the analysis, it was possible to elicit characteristics pertaining to affects that correlate with artwork preferences. Conclusion The overall purpose of this study was to develop an online art system for spontaneous and sensory appreciation. Consequently, a method of using affect data from viewers was investigated by modeling the probability of preferences of artworks. We wanted to explore the diversity of art appreciation, and realized the possibility of appreciation through instant sensory experiences and affects. The limitations of this study concern the diversity and reflection of affects based on artwork content.
