abstract
Background In the case of augmented reality in industrial sites, it is difficult to estimate images based on non-markers in many cases where objects are composed of facilities, pillars of buildings, the same shape, multiple symbols, and patterns. Therefore, although marker-based augmented reality is widely used in industrial sites, the existing marker designs for augmented reality are insufficient to be used in the environment within the industrial site, and research on usable marker designs has been insufficient. Accordingly, this study was conducted to explore ways to improve the design of markers by analyzing the design attributes of markers suitable for the characteristics and purposes of industrial sites. Methods In order to define the marker properties that must be present in order to design a marker for augmented reality suitable for the manufacturing industry. First, look at the concept of augmented reality and markers for augmented reality, Second, we looked at how previous research on markers for augmented reality was. Third, by analyzing the cases of augmented reality markers used in industrial settings, general propositions about markers to be applied in industrial settings were derived. Fourth, based on the derived general proposition, the properties of marker design to be applied in the industrial field were defined by an inductive analogy inference method, and basic properties were presented. Result For markers for augmented reality in industrial settings, fast recognition should be prioritized in recognition of augmented reality devices, and unique feature points or shapes for information matching exist in the marker itself so that unique information can be obtained. In addition, it should be easily printable against damage or loss of markers, and should be designed in a simple and clear way as much as possible, minimizing color and complex images in order to be well recognized even in occlusion and ambient lighting. It should be an intuitive design that can distinguish whether it is a marker for augmented reality, as well as convey the meaning and aesthetic elements of the object. Based on this, the definition of design properties of markers to be applied in industrial settings was analyzed into four categories: usability, economic feasibility, intuitiveness, and aesthetics. Conclusion In order to apply marker-based augmented reality within the industrial site, it is difficult to use commonly designed markers when using markers, and it is necessary to design industrial markers that apply the relationship between the properties derived from this study and the industrial field environment. Based on these results, it was confirmed that using the augmented reality marker designed on the industrial site of the smart factory can be an important solution to improve the previous recognition problems and problems occurring in the use of augmented reality within the smart factory.
