abstract
Background Disney's animated live-action film "Aladdin" became an issue with colorful costumes as Princess Jasmine's role in the play was emphasized, even though the main character was Aladdin, the male character. In this study, from a feminist perspective, we looked at the women's images in Aladdin films through film costumes, and suggested the direction of visual expression of women's images in real-life movies. Methods This work combines theoretical and case analysis studies. First, for theoretical research, we redefine terms based on professional books and prior research related to film costumes from a feminist perspective and examine the characteristics of film costumes from a feminist perspective. In addition, a total of nine sets were analyzed for the Jasmine Princess Film Awards of Aladdin, an animated real-life film, and the characteristics were derived by analyzing them according to the flow of the story. Result The results of this study are as follows: First, perspectives based on the concept and characteristics of feminism theory have been shown to be appropriate as a methodology for character character characteristics and film costume analysis of the film Aladdin's Jasmine. Second, in the live-action film Aladdin, Jasmine's film costumes reflected the characteristics of the story and character in the play. Third, in Aladdin, Princess Jasmine's costume was derived from the characteristics of liberal feminism, radical feminism, and postmodern feminism in terms of feminism. Conclusion Liberal feminism characteristics were expressed in a design that emphasized practicality and functionality that excluded modern pants and decorations in film costumes, along with Jasmine's story development against patriarchy and gender equality. Radical feminism emphasized the process of Jasmine's self-visiting in Aladdin, and proudly expressed her as a woman with exposure and human exaggeration emphasizing femininity. In postmodern feminism, the characters in the drama, which sympathizes with the people beyond the status of a princess and embraces the two sides of the sex, were displayed through costumes.
