| Background Humanity has an extinct of pursuing beauty. Considering various decorations found in ancient relics and remains, crafts hold significance in the decorative instinct for feeling the aesthetic pleasure based on the enjoyment. Especially, modern jewelries among craftworks are combined with the craftsman’s artistic sense and philosophy to serve the decorative function and role that express the identity as the medium of artistic experiment and mean of self-expression. This study focuses on such crafts’ decorative instinct, deeply explores the decorative beauty of crafts by utilizing the traditional inlay technique with a long history and surface decoration element, and researches on making the artwork that demonstrates the depth and rich expression of decorations with traditional technique and modern design.
Methods This study deeply explores the importance and essence of decoration in crafts, examines the inlay technique, and finds measures for utilizing inlay technique on the jewelry design. In response, this study tries to show a balanced and harmonious design by expressing the dynamic movement of a seed with the inlaying technique with the motif of a dandelion seed.
Result Decorations have been essential since the beginning of the humanity. In crafts, as decorations include the essential use of the craftwork, they expressed by vision and touch. Therefore, craftworks are able to create different colors and shapes depending on the material and expression technique. Also, decorations can emphasize a formative shape while guiding the interpretation of the whole artwork depending on the situation. Likewise, decorations deliver the aesthetic effects and they are perceived as a period of the craftwork.
Conclusion In crafts, decorations are visible and touchable and decorations present the features of aesthetics, enjoyment, and functional emphasis. Metal inlay technique enable expressing various surface decoration elements and this study tried to interpret the traditional technique in a modern way and make a jewelry that expresses formativeness and decorativeness at the same time. This study deeply explored the decorative beauty in crafts and this study seeks to find more decoration expression methods that enable communication between the traditional technique and modern time through continuous researches. |
