A Study on the Conceptual Expansion of Way-finding as Public Art - Focusing on the Case of Bath Way-finding System Design -

abstract
Background Way-finding was considered as a very basic functional structure that made it easy to find the way in a place However, the study has started from an recent idea that way-finding system is thought to be expanded to public art in terms of public space vitalization, professional design in city landscape, and consideration for residents and communities. Methods First of all, the study clarifies the conceptual change and expansion in the way-finding system and public art through theoretical consideration. Secondly, the conceptual features of public art were divided into four criteria for the case analysis. ‘Bath City Information System’ was selected as a recognizable case based on published reports and media presentations. Conclusion In Bath case, some features were found that correspond to the concept of public art. First of all, it could be promoted to vitalize public places. Secondly, it was also recognized that as part of the urban design, the connectization of public spaces was led. and that professional designers participated in a wider range of public facilities. Thirdly, Bath case also has features that reflect the opinions of the residents in the process of community activities and progress. To sum up, way-finding system can also be discussed in the scope of public art, so it is very likely that the mutual concept will be expanded.
