abstract
Background There is a growing number of apparel manufacturers who are making their garment samples through product evaluations using 3D simulation technology. Despite its rising popularity and continuous progress, the appearance of tailored jackets are often assessed by expert panelists on actual human body. This is due to its complex construction process, which involves many pattern pieces and manipulation techniques. Therefore, this study aims to conduct appearance assessments of tailored jacket collars on both human subjects and a 3D virtual model to determine appropriate collar laying amounts for different collar stands. The findings of this study will contribute to the advancement of 3D simulation in garment manufacturing process. Methods This study conducted appearance assessments of tailored jacket collars by selecting three human subjects and creating a 3D virtual model, whose body measurements fall within the average range of women aged between 20 and 29 years old in the 7th Korean Human Body Measurement Investigation. Different collar laying amounts were applied to the both actual and virtual tailored jackets in accordance with the changes in the length of collar stands. The data collected from the assessments was processed using SPSS 22.0, and statistically analyzed through technical statistics, t-test, F-test and Duncan-test. Result The results of the appearance assessments demonstrated that when the jacket collar stand was 2.5cm, the most appropriate laying amount for the collar was 3cm, while 3cm collar stand was with 3.5cm laying amount, and 4cm collar stand was with 3.7cm laying amount. Conclusion The findings of this study were able to validate the credibility of 3D technology in garment simulation to some extent by successfully comparing the results of the both assessment methods, and thereby proposing appropriate collar laying amounts for different collar stands. This will further enhance the effort to improve the accuracy and usage of the virtual simulation on apparel products.
