Instructional Guidelines for Teaching Oral and Written Presentation for the Interior Design Major Students

abstract
Background Oral and written presentation skills are important elements of professional standards in interior design related major and are increasingly emphasized in various fields of study in the college education environment. This study explores the course development of oral and written presentation to be applied in the framework of interior design curriculum. Methods Content analysis and qualitative case study were used for literature review and course development. Result Instructional guidelines are presented with course contents, instructional strategies, and evaluation criteria according to the types of presentation skills required in executing different phases of work expectations. Specific project types suggested in this study are: 1)production of print materials for flyers and hand-outs, 2)preparing documents for work report, 3)writing newspaper review, 4)introduction of space with different perspectives of narrater, 5)presentation of project proposal, 6)client interview, and 7)group discussion in the format of team meeting, panel and round table. Conclusion Comparative studies in different class settings and operation of the course in conjunction with studio and professional practice courses are recommended for further study. Also, applying the course according to different levels of grades will enhance overall educational outcomes.
