abstract
The purpose of this study is to compate and analyze the morphological characteristics of fingernails when gel polish is removed; to scientifically analyze nail damage when gel polish is removed from nails; and to suggest a way to minimize nail damage. For this, an experiment of 5 females in their twenties and thirties was conducted, and their nail surfaces were observed using an atomic force microscope. The IBM SPSS Statistics 22 for Window program was used for the statistical processing. The findings of the study are as follows: As for the untreated nails where gel polish was not applied, the results of measuring two-dimensional images and three-dimensional images showed that there were few differences in color density and the density was uniform and that the surfaces of their nails were almost even. When soaked off to remove gel polish, the participants` nails got rougher by repeated treatments compated with those of untreated nails. In addition, it was also confirmed that the degree of roughness of their nails increased by repeated treatments when ground off just like that of nails being soaked. When the roughness degree of soak-off was compared with that of grind-off, the defree of grind-off appeared to be lower than that of soak-off. This means that grind-off damages nails less than soak-off. And regarding the unevenness of nails, the nails ground off were found to be more even than the nails soaked off, which means that grind-off damages nails less than soak-off.
