abstract
This study utilized a survey to collect and analyze data on bra wearing behaviors, and expected benefits and dissatisfaction factors of wearing a bra among US women over 40 years old. For the questions on the daily bra wearing behaviors, the largest number of women in their 40s and 50s said they wear bras `from waking up until going to bed`, preferred their bras to fit `just right`, and considered the`level of fitness of bra` as the most influential purchasing factor, while women in their 60s answered, `only wear bras when going out`, `slightly loose fit` and the`level of comfort of bra` for the same questions, respectively. Most women from all the age groups chose, `to prevent breasts from bouncing` as the purpose of wearing a bra, and `to push breasts upward` as the most expected benefit from wearing a bra. The most frequently mentioned responses from the question on the important benefits of wearing a bra were, `to prevent nipples from showing through clothes`, `to avoid breasts from swaying` and `to make breasts look natural`. As for the uncomfortable bra components, `shoulder straps`, `wire`, and`under-cup and wings` were the most commonly chosen responses. When asked about the problems encountered after purchasing a bra, about 69.77% of the overall respondents selected `uncomfortable`. The findings of this study will be useful for the development of bras with a high level of fit and comfort for the researched age groups.
