Korea has established philosophical and social communities of traditional ideas based on Confucian ideas. Andong Hahoe Folk Village represents Korea`s confucian culture and spiritual culture, and has been listed as UNESCO World Heritage under a property of Confucian cultural area of northern Kyungbuk region on July 2010. However, currently, tourist development of confucian culture leading into reckless installation of commercial facilities and consequent outdoor signboards, is not only destroying the scenery, but also defaming the spiritual and philosophical meaning of Andong Hahoe Folk Village, Korea`s symbolic legacy of confucian ideas,
This research has approached the potential design of outdoor signboards from a view of confucian ideas in order to set the identity of Hahoe Folk Village representing confucian ideas, and also has suggested the potential design of outdoor signboard using the concept of confucian ideas of Andong`s world renown confucian scholar Yi Hwang, naturalistic confucianism and Doctrine of mean.
Though current tone of Andong Hahoe Folk Village is YR tone, mainly composed of natural materials such as red clay bricks, straw or timber, in case of outdoor signboards, various of artificial colors and advertisements overflow. Unnecessarily huge size of signboard and overflowing advertisement banners also show the problem of focus on commercialization. Therefore, simple design form encompassing concept of harmony and balance and beauty of nature considering harmony and balance of confucian ideas needs to be introduced.
The design of outdoor signboard of Andong Hahoe Folk Village needs a more fundamental design approach that considers confucian ideas and values, and through this design approach, Hahoe Folk Village`s identity could be set and establishment of tourism infrastructure could be maximized. |
