Anti-Aesthetics Expressed in Fashion-Focused on Bas Kosters` Fashion Activities-

abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the anti-aesthetics in fashion focused on Dutch fashion designer Bas Kosters, whose fashion activities is getting an attention as a young contemporary anti-fashion designer. The research covers theoretical study to understand and analogize the key characteristics of the anti-aesthetics such as resistance, expandability, participation, and introspection. For the case study, Bas Kosters` works were analyzed through his own web-site, collection reviews, public interviews, newspaper articles, and exhibition reviews after 2000 and fashion collections from 2010 to 2014 AW collection. As a result of the study, the anti-aesthetic features derived from Kosters` fashion activities were classified into five categories: the avant-garde of anti-fashion, expression of anti-formalism, territorial expandability, social symbolism, intrinsic nature of aesthetic experience. The concept of anti-aesthetics in fashion refuses fashion trends and old stereotyped fashion system regarding clothing as a communicative medium and the anti-fashion in formal aspects denies the conventional ideal beauty and breaks away from the normative formality. Exploring an organic relationship between the society and human beings, anti-fashion allows to across over various genres to open up a wider creativity and provides participatory aesthetic experience to both designers and audiences. Ultimately, anti-fashion is a manifestation of aesthetic cogitating on fashion by its characteristics of negation and resistance and it is a new way of life due to practical implication for discovering possibilities of living and changing our society.
