Background In terms of picture quality, which is the most critical element in the development of broadcasting, people regarded it as high definition when HD broadcast began. However, as display has become high-definition and transfer technology has developed, it is required to reconsider image production in accordance with the improved broadcasting producing technology at the time of the UHD era of ultra high definition. Especially because makeup is closely related to the broadcasting producing system, makeup techniques vary depending on the picture quality and pixels. The technical environment of the UHD broadcasting with ultra high definition has made significant differences not only in makeup techniques but in makeup products as well.
Methods In order to analyze characteristics and differences of make-up, the selection of subjects was made by ten requested make-up specialists working in the field of broadcasting make-up for more than ten years for a total of twelve anchorwomen ― reckoning up each six who have respectively hosted prime news programs of MBC and KBS for more than three years from the late 1980s to now. Characteristics of twelve anchorwomen`s make-up were analyzed, make-up design was selected for demonstrating image make-up according to the changes in the technology of broadcasting production, and then changes after make-up shooting in accordance with different broadcasting cameras were analyzed through respective shootings of SD, HD, and UHD cameras.
Results then visible changes in each makeup after shootings with SD, HD, UHD cameras were analyzed.
Conclusions Firstly, regarding SDTV, the color format is compressed into 1/4 using the 4:1:1 type, while for HDTV, the 4:2:2 type is employed, with its color format compressed into 1/2. In case of UHDTV, on the other hand, it is possible to express a more delicate and natural image on a large screen with its color format over 4:2:2. SDTV, HDTV, and UHDTV differ from each other in terms of picture ratio and resolution respectively. They display a clearer picture of higher resolution, having the definition of 4 times as ultra-high as that of HD. In addition, they represent much more natural colors closer to the real ones. Second, the results from the makeup analysis of female news anchors As for their eyebrows, arched, standard, and angular eyebrows were represented, while diagonal and circular shapes were presented for their cheeks. And their lips were expressed in out-curved or straight shapes. The colors for their eyeshadows were brown and peachy and those for lips were red, dark purple, and peach. Their skin textures were expressed either matte or wet. Third, when shot using a SD camera by demonstrating the makeup of the SDTV era, the gradation of the makeup looked quite natural, whereas it looked unnatural with a HD camera and it looked dark and unnatural with a UHD camera. When the makeup demonstration of the HDTV era was shot using a SD camera, the makeup looked flat. It appeared natural when using a HD camera. However, it looked dark and dull with a UHD camera. When it comes to the makeup demonstration of the UHD era, the makeup appeared dull and flat when shot with a SD camera and so did the makeup with a HD camera. But the makeup looked natural and three-dimensional when shot with a UHD camera. Therefore, in the UHD image system, more elaborate and delicate makeup techniques are required to express the moist and natural skin texture with moderate thickness. |
