| Background In all of human history, the meaning of `ornament` has been expressed and translated in various ways in almost every visual field by people with various jobs, including craftsmen, artists, masters, architects and designers. However, in contrast to its necessity and importance, the meaning of “ornament” has been often neglected. And its value frequently devalued. Also, such topics as the reason why the concept of ornament, which are absolutely required in craft, have not been treated properly as art but have been regarded as a part of craft. The meaning of `being ornamental` in craft still has a negative aspect and has been considered to be inferior at the time when craft has independently established in the world of art.
The artistic and aesthetic possibilities and basis of ornament will be looked at through this study. The purpose of this study is to establish and reevaluate the content of ornament, based on convention of ornament and research of content in Arts and Crafts. In addition, the research marks the importance of decoration on the audience through looking at artistic and esthetic possibility and the origin of ornament from the point of view of Arts and Crafts. At the result, the study will extend the meaning and value of ornament in Arts and Crafts after researching its formality and contents which could be applied in Arts and Crafts.
Methods In order to do this, I set up a range and kinds of ornament based on how the people currently think about Arts and Crafts. I will find out how the ornament relates to other resource in Arts and Crafts in order to apply the suggestion to the current Arts and Crafts. After discussing the reason why people started to use ornament in the beginning of human history and the time when ornament was treated deeply with an academic value in western art history or painting, I write about what features and kinds of ornaments could be apply in the field of metal craft. Then this will be looked at in related trends or movements, the value, importance and characteristics of ornament in craft together with craft as an ornament.
Result This study emphasizes the importance of ornament in craft while distinguishing among art and the kind of art or skill which is practical or entertaining in order to provide such two fields as art and non-art or pure art and applied art. This study also focuses on the related value ratings, bringing up the issue of whether it is appropriate to devalue and consider art that contains anything other than the conditions of western art, which have been set by the critics of western art and include practicality, amusement, popularity or marketability, to be cheap or inferior. However, the process of bringing up that issue is not the purpose of this study.
Conclusion Ultimately, this study will help those people either creating or using craftwork to recognize the importance of ornamental art (activity) and provide artistic and aesthetic possibility. Based on the result of the study, in the process of producing or judging the value of the craftwork which is highly valued by more people as being excellent and providing an aesthetic impression, the result shows that how ornament will be valued and plays a significant role, providing an aesthetic impression in craftwork. |
