abstract
Background Olympic poster designs are important media to promote the games, provide information, and publicize the culture and art of the host country to Olympic game participants and audience. This study thus set out to review the functions, roles, and changing processes of Olympic posters and investigate the elements that should be reflected in the topic selection and content organization of poster design, the designs of high preference and attention, and their factors. Methods The study examined the functions, roles and changing processes of Olympic posters in the literature and analyzed the topic selection, content organization, and design preference and attention of Olympic poster designs through a survey. Result The analysis results of previous Olympic games identified four major characteristics including the high percentage of posters whose motives were people(such as players), the official emblems of the games, and the landscapes of host country or city. The survey results indicate that the public placed importance on the promotion of games and the Olympic spirit as the elements of topics and content organization that should be taken into consideration in the design process of Olympic posters. Conclusion The findings suggest that it will be desirable to focus on the promotion of games including the information about the host country and year and the Olympic spirit when selecting a topic and organizing content for an Olympic poster design. It will be efficient for the preference and attention of the public to make great use of ①simple formative elements, ②colors of high chroma, and ③official emblems of the games in Olympic poster designs.
