ABSTRACT
Background As the public education field emphasises changes and the need for future curriculum, this study developed an interdisciplinary programme that encourages young people to be interested in social issues and experience how to solve problems using design and science and technology. The purpose of this study is to help young people, who are future citizens, understand others, present ideas for solving social problems, and induce active and practical actions through the convergent use of nudge design and 3D printing digital tools within the regular curriculum.
Methods We designed and applied a 3D printing maker convergence education program to solve social problems related to SDGs. First, in order to develop a convergence education program for high schools, an education program was developed by reflecting achievement standards and content elements based on high school science career elective subjects with design-related professors and field teachers. The training content consisted of a total of 5 stages and 12 sessions of practical experience program.
Result As a result of applying the program in four aspects, the participating students selected issues that were closely related to their lives or had major social issues as topics during the topic exploration process, confirming that the selection process was closely linked to the SDGs goals. I was able to. Next, we experienced ‘materializing social participation’ by producing results using nudge design and 3D printing and deriving ideas that can be applied in practice. Through this, we were able to prove the meaning of convergence education and that it is an educational program that fosters student autonomy.
Conclusion In this study, by exploring various inductive factors of nudge design as a way to solve social problems, the students were able to achieve emotional and cognitive empathy, participate in the convergence education programme from their own perspectives, and concretise social participation methods in various ways. Therefore, in future convergence education courses, if design and digital science and technology are developed to be used as practical methods for solving problems beyond the role of creative tools, it may be a way to activate convergence education programmes for future citizens.
