FUXD : UXD framework for experiencing‘Flow’
함연 Xian Yan , 장주영 Ju-young Chang
abstract
Background UXD 5-layer and 10-element proposed by Garrett is commonly cited, which shows the system process of user experience design. It indicates a conceptual model and provides general basis for user experience design. Though “availability” is one of attributes that the success in user experience is made. However, positive experience cannot brought to the user only by virtue of availability. To emphasize the importance of the user satisfaction to the empirical design, it is advised to integrate theoretical elements of FLOW with those of UXD to formulate new UXD framework. The model of Garrett pays attentions to the user experience, but there is obvious lack of basis that could affect user’s psychological state. The research purpose is to explore the possibility that FLOW theory is integrated into the user experience design model through analysis on the development status of psychology and FLOW theory in the field of design. In addition, the basis is provided for user’s psychological design. Based on 5-layer and 10-element proposed by Garrett, the research result of psychological input theory is analyzed to make up for the deficiency in existing UXD 5-layer and 10-element model and propose new experience design framework. Methods Firstly, the development of UXD is investigated and UXD 5-layer and 10-elment is analyzed in the research to conclude advantages and disadvantages. Secondly, the status of the application of psychology into design is studied to find out the basis of FLOW theory (Cskinszentmihalyi) for psychology aspect of UXD 5-layer and 10-element model proposed by Garrett. Under the background of user experience design, 8 elements of FLOW theory are summarized as 9 elements and 4 stages of FLOW to associate these 9 elements with UXD 5-layer and 10-element model. Then, 9 elements of FLOW are rationally supplemented in all aspects of UXD 5-layer and 10-element model to form the new UXD design framework (FUXD) aimed at reaching the FLOW state. Result FUXD framework, independently existing to realize user’s best experience and satisfaction, is the supplement of existing user experience element framework. According to the research result, it is necessary to take FLOW element as the design objective and integrate it with user experience element. New experience design framework is developed through analysis of user experience and FLOW element from the theoretical aspect in the research. Conclusion New design framework emphasizing the optimal experience and satisfaction that is integrated with user experience element by taking FLOW element as design objective, which makes up for the deficiency in user satisfaction in the existing user experience element model. As abovementioned, FUXED framework proposed in the research indicates the new experience design framework based on the user’s psychology. It is the design framework escalating to the mental and psychological demands from functional needs. The existing user experience element model is improved to make up for the user’s psychological deficiency.
