A Study of the Trends in Academic Research on the Rose of Sharon, Korean National Flower - With a focus on academic journals and dissertations -

ABSTRACT
Background National emblems belong to a field that requires expertise and should also be received as familiar to the general public, which necessitates advanced studies from various perspectives. The aim of this study is to investigate and analyze from a designer’s viewpoint the research trends in academic journals as well as master’s and doctoral dissertations that are centered on the Rose of Sharon - Korea’s national flower emblem.
Methods Theses in academic journals as well as master’s and doctoral dissertations that were published between 1982 and 2020 have been selected for the analysis of the research trends on the Rose of Sharon design. The theoretic review in Chapter 2 gives general descriptions. In Chapter 3, an analysis has been carried out in regard to the current state of overall research included in academic journals as well as master’s and doctoral dissertations. In Chapter 4 a comparative analysis has been conducted on the research trends in chronological order and from various perspectives - the fields, content and methods of research.
Result The findings are as follows. First, the chronological analysis of the trends found that the studies in the 1980s started to deal with the Rose of Sharon’s botanical characteristics while the papers published in 2020 showed that research has been conducted for the purpose of securing regional identity. Second, the analysis by research field indicated that the studies of the Rose of Sharon design have been conducted in such areas as visual design, cultural products, brand strategy, fashion, hair and history. Third, the analysis by research content has been carried out with a focus on the studies of Rose of Sharon pattern designs.
Conclusion Research on the Rose of Sharon design has been conducted since 1982. However, merely five dissertations dealt with Rose of Sharon pattern designs that utilize lifelike flowers, and this necessitates further research on the design of this national flower.

Valuation of Domestic Small SUV Brand Using Laddering Method - Focused on KIA-Motors's small compact SUV brand.-

ABSTRACT
Background Small SUVs have more than doubled in the auto market over the past three years. The reasons for choosing the compact SUV were its reasonable price, convenience of driving and refined design. A key factor in this market growth is the brand value, and we want to evaluate the value of small SUV brands accordingly.
Methods The 50 subjects were selected after pre-evaluation, and Kia Motors, which has the largest number of compact SUVs in the country, was limited to research. By applying Hinkle's Laddering Methodology using Hinkle's Laddering Methodology, the Attributes-Consequence-Values research model based on the Mean-end Chain theory was used. Through such a research model, the company aims to assess the value of Kia Motors' four compact SUV models.
Result The results of the small SUV brand valuation show that overall quality and high quality persistence are the most important factors in the attribute stage, and that the degree of value in the result stage and the special reason for purchase have been analyzed to have a positive effect on the value stage of attachment and preference. The degree to which the small SUV brand value is known, user image, uniqueness, and intention to pay the surcharge were extracted as having a (-) effect.
Conclusion The results of this research model using the Laddering methodology as a valuation of Kia Motors' compact SUV brand have extracted factors that strengthen the properties existing in small SUV brands and the results provided to consumers by their attributes. This factor has been identified as an important factor in the connection between consumers' personal values, and the conclusions of studies have been extracted that it may affect the thinking and behavior of customers who intend or make purchases.

ABSTRACT
Background The production-distribution-centered corporate structure, which creates and distributes products to create continuous profits, has actively used a comprehensive product reflection tool called a brand by reducing product diversity and replacement cycles. The multi-layered/integration of the product/service competition environment caused the need for a marketing strategy called 'brand structure system'. It stands out as a mechanism.
Methods Find out how buyers perceive the brand as a collective product line and make discriminatory selection behaviors for individual products according to the brand's awareness. After grasping the characteristics of the hierarchical structure and components that make up the'brand structure system', marketing strategy and structure Examine the characteristics of the system and analyze its operation plan. From the perspective of improving the efficiency of systematic communication and management diffusion of buyers about products, it is suggested that the brand structure management can be a concrete tool for strategy and response.
Result As a sustainable system of brand maintenance through diversification of products and competitive environments, individual brands are incorporated into a systematic management structure. In the overall brand structure system, purchasing power and awareness can be expanded and coped, and through this circular structure, the overall corporate brand awareness and image can be horizontally and vertically united. Therefore, the structure strategy for the brand group should be positioned within the structure of communication.
Conclusion The use of the brand structure system for the efficiency and appropriateness of communication with buyers acts as an effective management tool that increases the awareness of products and the entire company and the value of tangible and intangible assets.

A Study on the Punk Pattern Gad Design Using 3D Printing

ABSTRACT
Background In this study, we tried to understand traditional Korean Gat, which has become an international issue due to the popularity of the Korean Wave, the Netflix drama "Kingdom," and seek to modernize the gat design that reflects the trend from the perspective of design. In particular, the company sought to apply PLA filaments to utilize customizable 3D printing and eco-friendly design during the manufacturing phase.
Methods Research methods conduct theoretical research and work production research together. Through theoretical research, we understand about the Gat, and seek research methods for the production of the work. And the production process for producing 3D printed freshly made works using eco-friendly PLA filament materials was carried out with concept planning, design, modeling, 3D printing output, and completion of works.
Result The results of this study first confirmed the possibility of using 3D printing to explore the modern design of traditional Korean Gat due to the influence of the Korean Wave. Second, the 3D printed Gat design using eco-friendly materials was found to be capable of applying modern and eco-friendly designs for the globalization of traditional Korean gat. Third, 3D printed gat using PLA eco-friendly material filament was derived as a result.
Conclusion As a way to globalize Korean culture, differentiated designs that reflect trends that are prevalent by utilizing Korean Wave-based Gat can satisfy consumers' pursuit of individuality, while new designs that apply eco-friendly PLA filament materials suitable for consumers' eco-friendly consciousness can be a product based on the overall social status of pursuing sustainable development and consumer needs. And in line with the change in the industrial environment of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the new design using 3D printing can suggest custom design, which can show the characteristics of product diversity.

A Study on Regional Brand Development Using Design Thinking - Focusing on Participatory Design -

ABSTRACT
Background Regional brands are becoming more important as regional promotion policies, but there are not enough brands that have been developed continuously or have succeeded in self-reliance due to structural problems that local governments lack a professional understanding of regional brands and marketing and are difficult to manage. In order for the regional brand to succeed, a new approach is needed to develop an integrated marketing centered on regional identity, a cooperative network in which various stakeholders in the region can participate, and a system where continuous management and objective evaluation are made. The purpose of this study is to propose a new strategic direction for the development and management of regional brands by examining the applicability of design thinking, which is being used as an innovative alternative to resolving indeterminate problems.
Methods Through literature research and prior study, strategic directions were analyzed considering the current status and problems of regional brands and the specificity of the region. And as a new alternative for the success strategy of the regional brand, we looked at the concept and process of design thinking and derived characteristics and processes that could meet the specificity and success requirements of the regional brand.
Result It has been confirmed that the characteristics and processes of design thinking utilizing the null logic can be applied flexibly to different brand problems in different regions, and can be applied as a system to develop activity programs suitable for four categories: brand originality, regional inherent solidarity, regional image and marketing consistency, and interactivity.
Conclusion As a flexible system that continuously transforms around core values and derives solutions, design thinking is expected to be a new direction for regional brand development and continuous management.

A Study on Convergence Design Education for Future Industry : Focused on Case Studies of PBL(Problem-Based Learning)

ABSTRACT
Background With the advent of the digital era based on IT technology, the design field has evolved from being focused on functional and aesthetic realization of the past for mass production and consumption of products to a means of solving problems and providing experiences for consumers and users. Design education at universities has also been striving to meet the demands of the times through voluntary efforts such as the establishment of subjects using various teaching methods and changes in organization in many universities to keep pace with the changing times. Among them, PBL is creative problem solving. It is a type of learning that is receiving much attention as an educational technique that allows students to acquire skills and learn a sense of knowledge, practical skills, and communication through cooperation activities.
Methods In this paper, four educators for each major share research results and educational content, and focus on design perspectives to students, while cultivating the ability to research and analyze the characteristics of consumers and markets in key areas of the future industry, A study on the establishment and execution of an integrated curriculum based on the PBL method that allows students to learn and understand a series of processes from development, coding and production to production was conducted.
Result Students who participated in the convergence PBL class developed in this study cooperated with each other in the process of app design and development of smartphones, focusing on consumer requirements, and carried out projects for each team. In this process, students from other majors shared different problem-solving methods and gained an understanding of the competencies required for each stage of the project.
Conclusion Through the implementation of the smartphone app development project required in the convergence PBL class proposed in this study, students were able to gain a learning experience that enhances the understanding of the role of design and collaboration of various majors in the problem solving process. Through these results, the case of PBL class can be expected to develop as a useful teaching model in the future in convergence design education.

ABSTRACT
Background This research aims to study how craft artists could find the appropriate ways to persuade and effectively demonstrate the concept of their creativeness when they are required to meet various prerequisites to apply for artist-in-residence programs.
Methods This research studied the examples of artists who participated in an international artist-in-residence program jointly conducted by the Korea Craft and Arts Design Foundation and the Marunuma Art Park in Saitama Prefecture, Japan, since March 2017. It analyzes the overall perspectives of artists and program providers based on direct interviews with the artist-in-residence program participants.
Result artist-in-residence programs is to enrich artists’ understanding of overseas expansion by acquiring the appropriate ways to motivate art institutions and related parties; it could help to develop joint objectives for both parties and lead to more opportunities in the future. The most effective and practical systems for artists to secure local networks and earn chances for overseas expansion are artist-in-residence program and art fair participation.
Conclusion In particular, the artist-in-residence program has been agreed to take by many countries. The huge growth in the number of such programs and their supports can be observed. The uplifting influence of the program has been enlarged since It has been played a great role in promoting art exchanging. The more opportunities for such programs are opened for artists all over the world. This study may reduce unnecessary trials and errors to help artists and program providers to focus on their goals.

A Study on the Effective Design of Pedestrian Safety Goods for Walking School Bus - Focused on Availability heuristic and Color perception -

ABSTRACT
Background The safe way for pedestrians to go to school should be guaranteed in the extended concept of “safe walking” beyond the designated range of school zones. The Working School Bus is a program that is provided as a safe attendant and dismissal for elementary school students, and the final goal is to provide safe attendance and dismissal. This study is a study to prepare a preliminary step to examine and present in-depth design plans to develop more effective walking safety products.
In particular, in traffic-related accidents, the behavioral psychological factors of both pedestrians and drivers can have various influences depending on the situation and environment. Accordingly, there is a need for a design approach that reflects the characteristics of the main pedestrian and the cognitive process of visualizing information called “children's pedestrian safety,” while repeatedly exposing the walking safety products of the walking school bus that can be worn by the main pedestrian.
This study seeks to explore the design of safety walking products for the activation of an effective walking school bus for children's pedestrian safety, which is being conducted at home and abroad, focusing on availability heuristics and color perception.
Methods First. Inspiring the necessity of this study by investigating the concept of a working school bus and prior research to understand the characteristics of the main pedestrian, and by surveying and analyzing satisfaction through a questionnaire on satisfaction. Second, we examine human observational learning through the concept of usability heuristics and Bandura's social learning theory, and review the literature research on information visualization and color perception based on this. Third, it investigates and analyzes cases of children's pedestrian safety products at home and abroad. Fourth, based on the above three research methods, design review items are derived, and image simulation is conducted to suggest the design of effective safety walking equipment. Fifth, interviews are conducted with traffic safety instructors (10persons) regarding the effect of the simulation. Result The preliminary survey on the satisfaction and requirements of the currently implemented working school bus confirmed that improvement and expansion of use(21%) of pedestrian safety products were necessary. In the survey to analyze the actual conditions and problems of the use of pedestrian safety products, dissatisfaction(93%) and inconspicuous reason(42%), difficulty in the role of pedestrian safety(38%), characteristics of users and As preference was excluded, users rejected it(12%), the types of items were not diverse(7%), and the sizes and designs of different safety products(1%) appeared. Accordingly, it was confirmed that practical walking safety products should be designed that reflect the behavioral and mental characteristics of the main pedestrian and the external environment and situation used in order to enhance the existing ineffective effect. Based on theoretical considerations, questionnaires, and interviews, effective walking school bus items were selected as bag covers, auxiliary bags and hats in consideration of the cognitive and behavioral characteristics of the main pedestrian. And it was summarized that the design should reflect the review of clarity, attention, usability, and aesthetics. Accordingly, the verification was conducted through a pilot image simulation, and the satisfaction with the improvement was confirmed through interviews with traffic safety instructors.
Conclusion Based on the design evaluation items applying the usability heuristic and color perception, the validity of design research and the direction of design were explored. Based on the review of literature studies and the results of questionnaire studies and verification, it can be seen that the perception, judgment, and behavior of children's pedestrians and drivers' information to reduce the incidence of accidents is related to availability heuristics and color perception based on psychological connection. have. It was found that the design of an effective walking school bus's pedestrian safety product should not be rejected by children pedestrians on the way to school, and should be selected as an item that can be easily worn even in unexpected situations in the external environment. In addition, it was confirmed that the perception of color reproduction and the usability heuristic should utilize visual perception of information.
The explicitness and attention of the items worn by children's pedestrians are repeatedly exposed through color perception, allowing drivers and other pedestrians to naturally recognize the message of“children's safe walking” and actively link the motives of their actions. If continuous exploration and design development and verification studies are supplemented, it is expected that various ways of using pedestrian safety products and active use can be expected.

A Guide to Using Plastic Materials for Industrial Design - From the Perspective of Sustainable Design -

ABSTRACT
Background Plastic is one of the most essential materials used in the industrial design field today. However, there are too many types of plastics, and if you dig into the contents, it is difficult to approach from the design field because it requires knowledge of petrochemistry or chemical engineering. However, as environmental problems caused by plastics have recently emerged, the need for understanding plastics in the industrial design field has increased.
Methods Due to the lack of related prior research in the design field, I first looked at the characteristics and uses of plastics through literature research while referring to data in other fields related to plastics first, and then analyzed the problems caused by plastics. Then the solutions being tried to solve the problems were considered.
Result Based on an understanding of existing petroleum- based plastics and bio-plastics, and also a detailed review of the negative effects plastics are currently having on people and the environment, 5 categories and 8 action items were derived to minimize such negative aspects when using plastic materials in the design field.
Conclusion This study was attempted to examine the specific characteristics of plastic materials from the perspective of industrial design, what aspects are problematic, and how the design field should deal with that problem. It is hoped that this study will be helpful in starting the related discussion in the future in the field of design.

Study on the Design Trend of Educational Social Robot

ABSTRACT
Background With the growth of the social robot market, the fields to which social robots are applied are also expanding, and in particular, the growth of educational social robots is also remarkable. Affected by these changes, robot design research is also actively progressing. However, research is mainly conducted on the entire field to which social robots are applied, and research on the design of educational social robots is insufficient. This study suggests basic data explaining the design features and trends of educational social robots.
Methods In this paper, the definition of robot design is theoretically examined, the role of robot design is redefined, and the trends of educational robots by country and the role of educational robots is studied in literature. Based on these theoretical studies, the analysis frame is set as the role, appearance, behavior and educational contents of educational social robots, and cases of social robots for interactive communication is selected and analyzed.
Result First, educational social robots perform multiple roles, and in particular, the role of peers is emphasized. Second, the educational contents is expanded to language and educational convergence, and customized contents is provided for natural dialogue with users. Third, in terms of appearance, there was a tendency to reduce the rejection of communication by using cute faces resembling characters and icons, small-sized robots, and vivid colors or pastel colors. Fourth, nonverbal communication is emphasized by reproducing humanoid robots that resemble human body structures to behave very similarly to people by reacting to conversations with users.
Conclusion The results of this study are limited because this study was conducted mainly on literature research and limited cases. However, through analysis, it was found that the educational social robot provide customized educational service by recognizing the learner's learning progress and emotions and develop into a platform designing for emotional and direct communication.
