ABSTRACT
As this generation is experiencing turbulent changes, transformation takes place both in human and urban areas. Building structures and urban environments that are closely intertwined with cities are significant elements for human lifestyles, and one of the environmental elements that create diversity is`murals Murals provide improved environments or it marks a place of resting. Urban murals established itself as a new urban environmental element as it expanded its territory within cities, and it provides benefits for the people. It acts as an environmental help for the people, and it also provides a positive emotional effect. Thus, I would like to take an in-depth look at urban murals, which provide various benefits and advantages for the people. Through the research process regarding urban murals, the study progressed with an objective to contribute at least miniscule positive influences for the development of urban murals. Urban murals are dispersed across numerous areas, but this study established Seoul as its main category, and its subcategories include 5 selective major tourist attractions or residential areas with high floating population volume. The murals found in the sub-classifications of the subcategories were observed and further classified according to its themes. Based on the thematic classification, a survey was conducted on various age groups to determine the preferred mural types from the spectators` perspective. I believe that the results of this study can be used as a reference for identifying the preferred mural types for future mural paintings.

JEWNR 47(0) 153-164, 2015 |
ABSTRACT
Design thinking involves divergent and convergent thinking towards a satisficing solution with issues such as rationalization, creativity and how it functions during the process with design activities. The goal of this research is to understand design activities and cognitive processes during design phases through comparative analysis of novice and expert visual communication designers under theoretical framework.
Research method for the study consists of three stages; 1) literature review, 2) experiment, and 3) analysis. After reviewing design thinking, visual communication design, and design activities and cognitive processes in design phases, a visual communication design task is performed by novice and expert designers in an experimental setting. Collected data includes concurrent self-reporting, writings, sketches, computer iterations, retrospective interview and researcher`s observational notes. Data assembled in one-minute time frames were examined by two coders for verbal and visual analyses.
For the design process, all expert designers went through the phases of problem structuring, concept generation, concept visualization, design refinement, and detailing whereas two of the novice designers jumped into visualization followed by refinement and detailing. Experts worked on detailed design in between phases instead of at the end which indicates the ability to segment and conquer design task according to confronted circumstances. In reflection to design activities, novice designers produced significantly larger number of sketches compared to expert designers. Expert designers produced small number of sketches but they made substantial progress during the process. Novice designers used graphic software as a confirmatory tool whereas expert designers started working with computer from preliminary design phase for exploratory purposes. As for cognitive processes, expert designers exhibited more divergent thinking compared to novice designers. Expert designers went through divergent to convergent thinking for concept generation, and repeated the process one more time during visualization until meeting a satisficing design solution. Novices who overlooked concept generation went through divergent to convergent thinking during sketching and visualization using computer.
The goal of this study was to investigate the thinking processes of visual communication designers during the entire design phases through comparative analysis of novice and expert designers. This study contributes to the comprehensive exploration of the design phases as most of the prior researches concentrated on the conceptual stage of design process. This sets example for examining design disciplines according to the design objectives, functions, artifacts, and how designers operate while designing. For the future research, specific issues found from the study need to be further investigated with larger number of participants for finding patterns of visual communication designers` thinking processes.

JEWNR 47(0) 165-174, 2015 |
ABSTRACT
Customers of 21century are looking for a product in consideration of not only functional aspects that gives comfort to their lives but also those that can satisfy their senses. Products are being made with sensible designs more and more, but there is little advanced research that focuses on sense and sensibility in the design paradigm.
So in this research, we studied on the correlation of olfactory and visual senses with the sample that shows both visual sense, which is the most popular subject of research among the five senses, and olfactory sense, which is the least popular one. First of all, we are trying to figure out the congruency between the visual image of the package design and olfactory image of the fragrance with a sample of perfume that has both visual and olfactory senses. Thus, we examined if the product was made adequately with olfactory sense and visual sense through sensibility SD method.
The perfume selected for the research was ranked at 21th for the fourth quarter in 2013, and we didn`t consider any specific products family. As for the method of the study, we at first paid attention to the visual sense that people would feel with the visual form of the package design, evaluated the olfactory image of the object, and then we measured the result by the loading amount after using varimax rotation.
By this research, we could deduce the result that the preference for olfactory image, compared with that for visual sense, can vary according to the individual`s environment, memory, etc., and that there is no enough distribution to define by sense adjective language. Hence, we suggested the direction of research and the direction of further research.

JEWNR 47(0) 175-184, 2015 |
ABSTRACT
This study is based on the design that was developed through the use of stripe pattern design, which is the basic pattern design in the modern society. Along with the literature review, the study was carried out based on the use of a computer fashion design program to create design motives and application pattern. With such program, the modified image of the standard stripe pattern designs created by designers such as Tory Burch, Chanel, Nanette Lepore, Alexander Wang, TSL, Custo Barcelona were applied as the basic motif. Different shape variations and colors were sequentially applied at four different levels of application pattern based on the motif. The four projects` stripe patterns were created differently. The first one (I) was derived from the stripes of parasols. The pattern for the second project (II) was made with the use of marbling technique while oceanic organisms were used as the pattern for the third project (III). The last one (IV) pursued richness by having graphic patterns mixed in with minimalism.
Although the stripe pattern design is the most basic design, it is expected to be utilized differently based on natural sensibility and create various pattern images and new design concepts.

Typology of Co-design Strategy in NPD Process - A Conceptual Framework of Co-design Typology for User Participatory Design Approach -
|

JEWNR 47(0) 185-196, 2015 |
ABSTRACT
Over the last few years, many marketing researchers have been attracted by the subject of co-operation between consumers and enterprises in the design of new products and services development (Cavallone and Cassia, 2012).
However, most of new product development fails; it does so not due to lack of advanced technology, but because of a failure to understand users` need (von Hippel, 2005). Concept of collaboration strategy (e.g. co-creation, co-innovation and co-design etc.) occurs more in practical business fields but definition has been equivocal also in literature has had conflicting. In particular, co-design is not a single approach but takes a wide variety of forms. As organisations increasingly team up with stakeholders to innovate, they confront critical and complex choices about whom to join forces with and how to share power with them.
Thus, this research will uncover a variety of different forms of co-design, ranging from enhanced customer sensing techniques embedded within largely enterprise-driven NPD processes to open source innovation occurring beyond the boundaries of the enterprise. Furthermore, this research classifies typology of co-design through analysing current theories, literatures and case studies. Moreover, the research findings indicate a direct positive relationship between designer and customer in co-design practices in order to trigger in new product development. Finally, this research develops conceptual framework for typology of co-design strategy in NPD.

ABSTRACT
Increasing the growth of mobile Internet, the method of use in Web Services have evolved into the floating form which various smart devices use. Web design services to flexibly correspond to interfaces of new devices pouring into a market are being demanded.
A Responsive Web production technique is necessary for the improvement of services and the efficiency of production in web magazines. And it is also required to the provision of identical user experiences and optimal services in each of various smart devices. In order to satisfy the above, We classify the type of web magazine into the visual reading type and the text reading type. And then focused on the Fashion·Current-affairs Magazines, we examine the design components and multimedia components, and compare the reactions of each sub-category. Visual reading type in web magazines presented a image-focused contents and a simple change of grids. And text reading type in web magazines have a complex structure of this method to expose and convert many design factors and contents at a time. The both types have something in common with which the multi-media factors have not been properly used by the Responsive Web Magazines of the two types. This study believes that the findings above help the working-level to figure out features of different devices and draw up designs when they try to create web magazines and make development plans.

JEWNR 47(0) 209-218, 2015 |
ABSTRACT
Color is one of the elements requisite for enhancing corporate images. Color itself can easily remind of the corporation, and it is an important element that can convey even sensibility images. So, color is an image element that symbolizes the corporation and its importance is being magnified. It also takes a role in enhancing corporate images.
We in this study used the Charles Egerton Osgood`s Semantic Differential Method (SD method), an sensibility evaluation, to analyze the influence of sensibility felt by color identity in building corporate images. We classified logos of global corporations into 12 colors, investigated and analyzed both the logos with original color and the changed ones with complementary colors.
This study was designed to investigate how color identity influences in forming corporate images so that we can evoke the importance of color identity and suggest ideas that can be a guide when developing corporate images. An coherent strategy of color identity can help form corporate images, and constant exposure of the color can be another distinct asset of a corporation. Through this study, we could draw a conclusion that color identity is closely connected with forming corporate images.

ABSTRACT
This work is an analysis on the domestic research circumstances of clothing for the disabled, aiming to orient the continuous and active research and have an easy access to necessary information for disability clothing industry. Research method practiced the literature survey including domestic journals and 73 articles of dissertation from 1976 to December, 2014 with which the research period, theme, method, object and location were analyzed. The following are the results. First, as a research theme, clothing composition accounted for the largest portion, followed by design, survey, clothing psychology and clothing science. Second, the research about physically disabled person was overwhelming, accounting for 82.2% in disability research. However, the research for the visually disabled, mentally retarded, or auditory disabled person was limited to a certain period of year and no research has been followed up, lately. Third, in research method, the most common way appeared in the order of questionnaire survey and interview and then design development, anthropometry, and pattern development. Fourth, in gender distribution as object, `only female` and `both male and female` were adopted with almost same ratio considered. And yet, in terms of detailed age distribution, adult female was the most highly surveyed group in frequency. Fifth, in location of research, the type of one certain single place formed a large majority. Particularly, researched places fell excessively on Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. This work confirmed several findings that there were many ways of disability clothing research performed domestically in its theme, method, object and such. However, the research was overly concentrated on certain types of disability, topics, methods, objects, or places. Therefore, it would be necessary that the ongoing clothing research for the handicapped should be followed up with a multilateral approach from all the realms of clothing science in systematic and active manners.
